Well, I didn't locate a #47 white wire coming from the cluster. I think the cluster wire tapped into it or something, and I threw all that wiring mess away with no way of knowing. So, I'll have to pull out the cluster if I want to get the factory tach going again. I did get an aftermarket one working just fine, so I'll use that for now.

I started up the car with a much better map. Although still rich, it reved perfectly. Spit out some oil through the dump tube. I think when I shimmed the oil pump, resulting in 80psi idle pressure at the head, it ends up being too much pressure for the journal bearings using a .060 restrictor. I'm going to clean up the oil and step it down to .045 restrictor and see how that works out. If I still get bypass, then I have a .035 to try. And if that don't work, then off to Majestic it goes!

Nice. I use a .030" restrictor for my GT turbo.

Yea, but you're ballbearing. I'll eventually go that route, but before spending that much, I've got the get the car running. The turbo is just dumping oil now, so I'm going to have it rebuilt by Majestic. I bought it from them and had it rebuilt once before. They have 1 day turnarounds and are only 150 miles away. I could have it back in 5 days. $350 isn't too bad to get it cleaned up and rebuilt. John said they go bad just sitting on a shelf apparently.

WTH? What turbo is it? That doesn't sound good...

Turnaround time seems excellent though.

It's a Garrett 60-1 to04e. It's been through hell on my last setup, then sat for 5 years. I expected this, so it's not a total headache.

I was dealing with a CNC router today with a 60,000RPM spindle and was reading the manual. It said if the machine was switched off, it would automatically warm up the spindle by running at 1/3 speed for 20 minutes. BUT if the machine had been sitting for a few months, to manually run the spindle at 15% speed for

TEN HOURS

before putting it to higher speeds or putting a load on it. I think the "turbos go bad on the shelf" phenomenon is both real and mistaken. Some kinds of precision bearings need to be run in at low speeds for a LONG time instead of just slapping an old turbo on your car and boosting away.

Turbo arrived at Majestic today. Waiting for them to tear it apart and let me know the damage.

In the meantime, I've been working on another project in cad. If you didn't know, I had a set of APE bars long ago but sold them cause I was no longer interested in the Tib and couldn't get around to installing them. Well, I'm building a set that is MUCH beefier and with some improvements. I'm not really worried about the added weight since it's in front of the front tires and down low, so should help with traction.

In theory, I could produce these if the demand was there. However, all the parts added up quickly and they'd cost about what Full Race does, approximately $300-350. So I'm not expecting people to jump on that wagon.

Got the call back yesterday from Majestic, authorized the rebuild, and got another call just now that it's done and will be shipping out today. Should be at my door tomorrow. Their standard rebuild is about $350, but mine required some machining because the tolerance was off. So total came out to $450 with return shipping. Overall, I don't think that's too bad. I've heard another place is slightly cheaper, but they can have 2 week turnarounds. Majestic is always 1 day.

If you're a machinist you probably own a ruler.
