If you understood islam as practiced by mohammed and his followers, you would never have to ask your 'they' question. He said there were
a) faithful muslims who followed him on raids to murder people for profit
B ) infidels and
c) "hypocrites" who would say they were muslims but did not go out on jihad . . . these were considered by the man who invented the religion to be worse than the infidel.

DTN gets a cookie for understanding the most basic tenets of libertarianism. I could pose a hundred similar question but answers were not the point. The Imam in charge of this islamic victory center is an advocate of establishing sharia in the USA, because it is an integral part of being a good muslim to follow sharia. All those things are just fine under sharia. They are (like islam is, when practiced as mohammed intended) incompatible with American law and culture.

Like it has been said before they have all the right to build a mosque wherever they want. This is 2 blocks from the WTC. If they wanted to build where the WTC stood then yes I would understand the outrage (even though legally if they owned the land then they can build). But honestly denying this mosque is a slap in the face of the Constitution.

This is what's wrong with the country as of late. All this God damn fear mongering. Oh and nice Stocker generalizing all Muslims as terrorist. I thought after all these years we would be past this. All I know is my muslim friends never tried to blow me up.... And all religions if followed word for word have their faults. Their a couple passages in the bible that make me giggle.

^^ Dude, that's exactly what it is. Everything in that picture. I bombed New York. Up yours American dogs. Maybe they're not trying to kill us all, but that picture is pretty much accurate and slightly exagerated. It's a big f*ck you to the average American who is not a follower of Allah.

Anyways... Did anyone notice that the mosque is being put up on Park Place AND Broadway? I hope that they don't put up hotels. That would be expensive as f*ck when you land there.

Haven't read through this cause I'm already in a bad mood and most of the posts I eyeballed make me puke a little in my mouth. So sorry if this point was already mentioned but just wanted to give ya something to think about. If I started another poll asking "Do you support the Us Constitution, specifically the First Amendment?" I'm willing to bet all of you who voted in this poll against the idea of a mosque in NYC would vote yes to the hypothetical poll..

I still say, stupid idea. If it was blocked it would be for the good of the public, as many things are blocked during the planning stage in a potential development. A lot of urban planning decisions are largely judgment calls. For example, it would be often disallowed to open an adult business in certain locations due to either zoning, or the good of the public.

Just because you own the land doesn't mean you can build whatever you want. If you think that, you've obviously never had anything to do with the development industry. At the engineering firm we regularly had to fight tooth and nail in court to have restaurants or stores opened in areas that the city planners didn't want them. We often lost those battles.

There's nothing in the Constitution that says you can build things wherever you want if you own the land. This is not an issue of freedom of religion. Nobody says Muslims can't go there, but the monument they want to erect to their strike against the American infidels is something that is not in anyone's best interest. How would you like to be an adjacent business when your insurance rates go up due to the increased risk of damage from arson and/or vandalism? What about the potential impacts to your property value? These are all used EVERY DAY to block other types of businesses or organizations taking up residence in specific places. This is no different.

If we say we're okay with this, then the PC police are the only ones that have won. I'm not religious and don't play the My-Invisible-Friend-Is-More-Betterer-Than-Your-Invisible-Friend game and I think it's a really stupid idea.

187sks - Now there's a well thought out rebuttal........... well, almost. You ALMOST had no brandishing on someone elses faith or beliefs, or pigeon-holing an entire ethnic group as terrorists. but looked at the legitimacy of building a mosque in a specific area. On that, I totally agree. Whether you agree or not agree about their right to practice and share their religion with whomever they please, there are other factors that DO go into city planning and such. But, it has to stay consistent with zoning and planning done in the direct vicinity of where they want to build the mosque. If the zoning rules dismiss the plan of building the mosque, based on many factors and not simply concentrating on 9/11, than so be it. If the zoning regulations do not constitute a dismissal of the plans, then they ultimately should be allowed to build the Mosque legally.
