red97tibby, do you have P0442?

what are the years of your tiburons?

see i knew my code was from what i tampered with because before i even touched the car it was fine, then when i was told to toss the canister i was smart to keep it. i knew where the trouble spot was.

if you hadn't tampered with it, there might be a leak elsewhere but i doubt it. what kind of mechanics are they, ASE? usually ASE mechanic will know in full detail.

wierd that you have a leak, but i never had P0442, I had P0455. P0442 is just a leak detected somewhere. It is either the gas cap or the hoses on the evap canister are cracked from being old and hard. I'd replace the gas cap under recall first. Basically you can bring any 1997-1999 Tiburon and Elantra in and get a new gas cap under recall, free. Not sure if those are the exact date cars, it was a long time ago.

a lot of the times the solenoid valve needs to be replaced, but in your case pop open your drivers side mud shield and bend it down so you can get to the canister. the canister is right there and the hoses are in plain view. unscrew it and unclip the solenoid from the plug and inspect all of the hoses at home in good light (since it's cold out).

you can try replacing one that is cracked, or lube them all up. make sure when you lift the car to put something under the car for safety while you're digging around in there. if that's not the problem then the leak may be elsewhere. i would guess the purge and gas hoses to the right of the battery tray. the other place there could be a leak is if you follow the purge to the intake. the remaining place the leak would exist is near the fuel tank but i doubt that.

only onw way to find out yourself. if you can't come to conclusion, go to an ASE certified mechanic. if you go to a mechanic, you'll be paying for inspection but you'll know that you can't do anything yourself.

you will not pass emissions with that code lol, i know that for sure.

^lucky!! maybe i should do that.

well banana split, i step down from my pedestal. put my evap system to stock. my evap code went away with the DTC completed. now all of the sudden after the computer reset, it is back on. it could just be that i need to complete 3 DTC's before it gets erased from storage.

if it's not that, then red zman you must be right. i bought a brand new 2001 spec gas cap. all my connections are hella good. i mean i'm not stupid, i'm 23 and i think i know how to secure a damn connection good with barbs. the quality of my work is precise. This time it's just a P0442 (small leak detected).

should the next 2 cycles complete, it must be some form of leak around the fuel pump. i hate to get it pressure tested at the dealer. dealer sh:t costs so much.

that small leak should be easy enough to find.. replace the gas cap and listen all over for noises. that leak would be a hose comming from your gas tank or intake manifold somewhere.

^cool man, i'll get right on it. if there's anything i've got it's ears. the car is running beautifully besides the "glitch"

stocker, DTN helped me figure out it the P1613 is a short in the circuit somewhere in the wiring. But he says the computers are encoded for Manual and Automatic, so if I change the computer to a Manual, the CEL shouldn't light up because it's not programmed to. The only thing I'm worried about is the Rev A differences. Although the function of 96-97 and 98-01 Evap is the same, the coding and function might be different. Also the Idle tracking switch might not have programming in the new computers which would prove mine useless.

My best bet is to go up there and explain the 1613, tell them the whole story and tell them the exhaust/emission is fine (if the leak goes away after the third drive test cycle) i've figured out how to trick the evap dtc as well!! i live in a neighborhood with lots of stop signs, crests, hills, turns...etc so i just drive through it everywhere taking random turns. it's really fun. when i come back the evap drive cycle completes after the next warm up cycle. lol...

HKC, if you've put everything back and are still having issues, I bet you money you have a leaking or kinked hose down there somewhere.

Bet ya.

Get the cap replaced, then do the following.

1. jack up the driver side of the car.
2. Take off both wheels.
3. Check all of the rubber hoses that are in the rear near the filler neck (where you put the gas in). Maybe have someone in the car start it and listen for leaks. You could even go as far as taking the hose sections off and bending them tight to see if there are tears, or just replace them. Of course for the front, you'll need to pull the wheel well liner off to check all of those.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>whatever was the cause of your P1613?</div>

stocker, nobody could ever fix this. it's still there, it must be a shortage in the harness or one of the tcm chips from when my CAI hit the + battery terminal a few times 02.gif it will cost $$$ to diagnose and it's not important mechanically so i'm just going to explain it to them and beg of their understanding 02.gif stupid thing if it wasn't for that then everything would be find but no i had overlooked it.

RED, i will do this as soon as the Evap DTC passes. The only test that doesn't want to pass now for some reason. I've been driving for about 2 months. Could it be because of the first O2 spacer?
