Hey everyone I was wondering if there are negative effects to putting a turbo on an auto? A local speed shop said the stock auto tranny's on an accent are not strong enough to hold under the power of boost and i should really think about doing an auto to manual conversion. What are your thoughts on this? i dont really want to do the conversion but if its the only way i can get my turbo kit to work then I guess I better start looking through salvage yards for a used 5 speed tranny. Functionally, turbos actually work better on auto equipped cars. However, most economy cars automatics are extremely weak. You should be fine with a small turbo running low boost, but you'll probably only see about 30 whp from such a setup. With your car being 7 years old, it might be cheaper to sell yours and buy a manual equipped car rather than trying to swap in a manual.

If you can figure out who can do it for you, get a better torque converter and go for it.
Hyundai's automatics themselves are actually very strong and hold power very well but the TC will give out with a large amount of power running through it.
Even stock I wouldn't hesitate to run 175whp through the Accent's Automatic. It might eventually fail, but you won't be breaking them all the time or anything like that.
