Actually all the car experts here in Korea say that on a stock tranny, 3rd gear is the weakest and the one that people shred. If you don't shred third at WOT, you shouldn't be able to shred 5th unless you do something stupid.

Yes you can taper boost in 5th gear. Apexi AVC-R electronic boost controller. I've got one, but the suckers cost $400+

how much can 3rd gear and 5th gear handle?

I want to run up to 12 psi of boost, should I worry much about my tranny?

What tranny is our 5 spd? is it MFA60?

it also says that max input torque is 270-320 Nm.

Can we put a tranny from Lancer Evo 6? It supports up to 400 Nm of torque.

 

It's not always about the power. It's about how you put it down. You'll have a much higher chance of shredding your gears with slicks running stock hp than you do running street tires at 300hp. The tranny can reliably handle 400hp. Don't worry. It's not your weakest link.

Boost is not always a correlation to hp. A fully built motor that's bored out, has high cams, and professional tuning can easily give 400+ hp on just 12lbs of boost. However, a stock engine with just a decompression plate will only yield about 225whp. Hope this helps

I was just cruising in 5th gear on the way back from the Drag strip. I was around 3500 rpms and mashed the gas as soon as I hit full boost I lost the gear. Power Levels 265 whp 289 TQ.

Believe me, I always thought 5th was the weakest gear (and it may be) before I came over to Korea, but I've talked to the actual President of VHR clutch systems and over in Korea 3rd gear is the biggest culprit. Perhaps it's because there aren't very many opportunities here in Korea to fully boost 5th gear. Anyways, there are MANY people here in Korea running 300+whp without any transmission issues. Myself included.
