Did you mean your router is the WRT54G? If so you should not have any problems connecting. Go to Linksys and download the latest firmware.

**Bump/Update**
I tried using using a shared connection with my PC, but I got a IP conflict do to having to add a second ethernet card, I fixed that by bridging the connections between the two cards. But I get the same "unable to continue do to technical difficulties" error .

Okay, slow down. GO back, uninstall your router and everything else, make sure you put all the XBL settings back to factory defaults.
Then start over. Install your router, get the updates.
Then hook up the xbox and power it up. Make sure your settings are set as per your ISP's instructions.

What's their web addy?
Something you might have to try is to directly connect your XBOX by it'self, directly to the modem. Reset the modem, and see if you have access.
Then work backwards from there. Comcast tried to sell me 2 internet accounts, but then I found I could just get a second IP from them and do it that way. With the router, you don't need to do even that (I'm running wireless now), but comcast couldn't figure out how to do it even thoughthey say they are XBL compatible.
