FYI - my first step is downloading America's Army. Mostly because I remember it being fun, second because it's free.

If anyone wants to join me, let me know.

QUOTE (StrikeEagle @ Feb 26 2008, 12:17 AM)
Counter-Strike Source (I usually don't play online, the people are way too good, but I do LAN games on occasion)
America's Army (haven't played in a while, but it was terrific)
Starcraft Brood War (I play this one in spurts, all online though)
Half-Life series (not a multiplayer online game, but you need the interwebz)

excellent choices, theres a new starcraft coming out as well....

And tanc how did you pull that off? I used to play CS a lot and have a friend that still plays on cal. I used to be pretty competitive at it but when I quit playing for a couple years I lost most of my edge.

truthfully though these days I'm more into the racing games. Especially rally games. You can get colin mcrae 05 for free on gametap. Try that out.

I stopped playing PC games because of the following reasons.

1. Constant PC Upgrades needed for the newer games.
2. Rampant cheating/modding in EVERY game.
3. If you DIDN'T upgrade your PC, the guy that could afford the new monitor and 800 dollar video card could pick you off while you still couldn't even see him.
4. Controls were too varied/complicated/individual.

I like playing on consoles because...

1. No upgrades.
2. Very level playing field. Yes, HDMI and a better display will help you more, but controls are pretty much universal.
3. Modding/cheating is very small, and very basic. Cheating consists of known "glitches", which can easily be avoided.

I do miss it though. Return To Castle Wolfenstien and Enemy Territory for it, were one of the best games ever.

Supercow, truthfully I never planed on doing it. I just started playing for the fun of the game than I realized I started getting on pretty good teams. Than the cs cal was created and we started off in cal-o and went undeafeted, than got bumped to m and did the same thing. Than they moved us to cal-i. After a couple months they introduced CPL to CS and the best CS clans int he world got invited. We won the tournament with over 100 clans from all over the world. I think I made 2000$ and some comp parts that weekend.

From there our team started getting sponsored, different companies "hired" us to represent them at these big tournaments etc. I think in total with all money + prises and sponsorship parts, I made around 20000$ in 5 years.

I agree with every point RedZMan has made.
Buy yourself an xbox, and save the computer for drawing and typing.

I'm on a budget fooz... plus I like the PC controls, always have. I Roxorz.

I bought a $350 computer, and it does everything I need it to do, and it kickz arze. I don't have the financial ability to buy a $300 XBox and pay $50/game... plus this is just for fun, when I get bored once or twice a week. If I had time to play it daily, I'd go for the nicer console setup, but for my sporadic gaming cravings I'll stick to the cheap PC games.

Separate note... I downloaded all 2GB of America's Army last night and had one helluva time getting the PunkBuster to update. It kept looping when I tried joining a game, going from 3% to 98% then starting the PB update again. I ran the manual update in the folders, set the Compatibility to run as Admin, and it finally let me join a game, but then started kicking me out saying there was a problem or conflict with my PBK^^^? somethin'

I gave up, might try again tonight.

Here it is.

Cost comparison.

http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/22/financia...-console-costs/

QUOTE
Even the most diehard PC gamer has to admit that their console gaming brethren get the better end of the deal as far as costs are concerned. But exactly how much does a console gamer save over the system'ss lifespan? A poster over at TechConsumer crunched the numbers and found that, when everything is added up, the savings aren't necessarily that great.

When all is said and done, the full Xbox 360 gaming setup (including TV, accessories and Xbox Live subscription) costs $3,152 over six years, about $350 less than a basic gaming PC for the same period. Of course that cost includes a 42" 1080p TV, while the comparable PC uses a relatively paltry 22 inch display. When a comparable screen is used on the PC, the savings on the console side balloon to near $1,200.

The real killer for the PC, of course, is the upgrades (estimated in this study at $250 every other year) and recommended full-on replacements (every three years) that come much more frequently than the console equivalents (one replacement every six years). So, PC gamers, is it worth the extra money?

http://www.techconsumer.com/2008/02/22/pc-...more-expensive/

Now, some of their observations were just STUPID though.

Who would use non rechargable batteries in their controllers for more than maybe a month? 4 dozen batteries a year? Come on. Also, having that big bad ass monitor they described is nice, but not needed for the gaming. You can get by with a nice SMALLER one for much cheaper.
