Ok, as is always the case to one degree or another my job is not 100% secure. It just happens that at this moment it's less secure than normal by quite a bit. In fact, I'm seeing a lot of warning signs that could point towards impending doom on the workfront. Hopefully it will be averted, but it's bad enough that I'm trying to plan for if it happens.

I'm an Engineering Technician, which is a CAD drafter that does my own design under the supervision of an Engineer. I use AutoCAD, Civil 3D, EaglePoint, and other software to design subdivisions, commercial, and industrial sites. I also draw up structural projects and do some structural design although that's not my main function. I implimented and administer our Windows Server 2003 network and my current title reflects my position, I'm our Systems Manager even though I spend a lot more time designing.

I've been doing this since October of 2000 for the same company. In my area the whole Engineering field is depressed currently, probably to the point that I would have difficulty getting a job in the same field within reasonable commuting distance.

Some of you know me pretty well and might be able to provide me with some insight. Knowing me, if I retrain what sort of jobs do you think I might be well suited to trying? Anything I might be able to try with my skill set that isn't what I'm doing now? It doesn't have to be restricted to my professional skill set. I wouldn't even know how to go about listing intrests and abilities outside of my professional duties, so I guess you can just include what you know about me.

I'm not hung up on making a ton of money (although it would be nice) but I do need to pay my bills. To even consider a career I would need to be able to make a minimum of $30,000 starting. That's a huge pay cut, but for an awesome career I could manage to pay bills on it as long as I don't have to relocate. To relocate I would need nearly $40,000 for me to be able to scrape by.

If retraining is required I may be eligible to extend my unemployment for up to 2 years while retraining. If I sell some things I could get by on unemployment for that time.

So, anybody have any ideas?

I've asked myself that question before, (about you) but I would have a more accurate answer if I had a better understanding of what you've been doing for the last ten years. It was something I never really grasped. blush.gif

So basically, I dunno. stupid.gif

Oddly enough, at one point or another in time those were all careers I considered. Lol!

I'll write up more about what I actually 'do' because I have to figure out how to get that point across in a concise manner in case I'm looking for work outside of my industry anyways.

Bouncer isn't a bad idea...but I don't know what they get paid. Might not be a bad second job though.

If my company was hiring, (which we need people badly). I would say you would work on semiconductor equipment. Pay is good and you get to do some travel, if you like that kind of stuff.

This field goes up and down, we are laying off people. Hell, I made it threw 2 layoff in my 2.5 yrs here. I guess hard work pays off.

Here you don’t do much designing or anything like that, you get to figure out why it isn’t working correctly and fix it. That’s me, figuring SH*T out.

Its an interesting field, one where I knew very little of. I do have an AS in electronics, if that matters.

It one option to look into.

That might not be a bad idea if things go that way.
