I think the only way to decrease gun violence is to require that everyone know how to use one. How do we do that? Compulsory military service, just like in Israel.

Yep, I said it. The number one problem with guns in this country is safety. Far too many people are undereducated on gun safety and in my opinion I would have no problem requiring carry permit and courses in order to purchase and own fire arms of any type. I've heard the argument that gun ownership will drop and crime will blah, blah, blah. But I think you'll find that most gun owners would be more than willing to go though this kind of process for several reasons: 1.) This will reduce the number of gun related accidents. 2.) Gun purchases occur faster, often with turnaround in just a few moments, and are much more secure. 3.) In many states a carry permit doubles as a conceal license. And so on....

There are far more perks than there are cons. imho, it just makes sense.



When I was 7 a friend down the street found her dads revolver just laying on his night stand and loaded. Not even a trigger lock. Long story short as we all stood around and she showed it off, the gun discharged, struck her in the jaw and exited through the top of her skull. While we all just stood there. She lived but lost an eye and some of her frontal lobe. I'm not saying that education would have 100% prevented this, but even after the fact the father said he never understood the danger. Education could have save her eye and lack of it almost killed her.



It's not a perfect answer, but it's a solution that I think both side could agree on.

It's no different than requiring drivers ed before getting a license, something that should be required across the board as well.

 

I don't think gun control or eduction is the issue here. It is stupid cops spraying gunfire in a crowd. There cannot be a bigger fail in the performance of their duty to "protect and serve".

 

We fight like we train. Police should be badass marksmen when their heart rates are over 180 and they have tunnel vision. This IS a training issue. They need more of it. Good luck getting the budget for training however many thousands of cops NY has to the level required for excellent marksmanship in extreme stress situations.
