Embarrassed GM to Rename Car with RisquT Overtones

MAKUHARI, Japan (Reuters) - General Motors Corp will rename its Buick LaCrosse in Canada because the name for the car is slang for masturbation in Quebec, embarrassed officials with the U.S. automaker said Thursday.

GM officials, who declined to be named, said it had been unaware that LaCrosse was a term for self-gratification among teenagers in French-speaking Quebec.

GM officials in Canada are working on a new name for the car, a sedan that will go on sale next year to replace the Buick Regal.

The mix-up is reminiscent of another GM vehicle with an unfortunate name. In the 1970s, GM exported its Chevrolet Nova to Mexico and other Spanish-speaking countries, only to be told that Nova translated into "doesn't go." Despite the name, and contrary to popular folklore, the car sold well.

Seems to me like some people are oversensitive. La Crosse is a sport is it not?

how can you say that? Caddy was one of the first cars to use both assembly line production techniques AND mass production of identical parts

Granted, it was not part of GM back then, but still. Some of the General's subsidiaries have contributed a lot to automotive technology

Yeah... I have a 57 Bel Air that will blow the doors off any Hyundai, period. GM has some ballsy cars. Corvettes, Camaros, Cobalts, Nova, TA, GTO, Chevelle, and the list goes on. Hyundai has... What, an accent? I love my tib, but I would toss it to the curb for a new ZR1 Vette. hail.gif

I can see the connection though, playing with sticks and balls. Gotta beat some things now and again, GM knew what they were doin cool.gif

Well seeing how I'm from quebec and mainly french speaking...

"se crosser" (verb) is masturbating...

"crosser" is f***ing over someone

"crosse" is more like saying "ripoff" in slang term

But I guess some people can interpret it differently.... Nevertheless, haha! Funny wink1.gif

Haha. Love that. They should have just not acknowledged it and kept the name. Why bother changing it really? I doubt they will see any change in sales or anything.
