Steering Wheel Help?
Makings: What is it you are actually having difficulty with? Just the horn wiring or the whole install?
Also, you said you would post pics. Can you post them so we can all see what you mean? I wanna see this paperclip.
BTW, mine is an HKB boss kit & although it looks kinda cheap to me, the construction is still fairly sound; no paperclips here wink1.gif

Hi OxFxCoupe,
I'm having trouble with understanding what feed I need to connect to the horn, although MadJohn tells me that I only need one live feed, no earth. That stacks up with the wiring diagrams on hmaservice.com.
I'm also not best pleased about the paperclip "solution" wink1.gif
Here are the pics:
The hub itself - the black wire coming out is from the inside of the hub, presumably picking up yje current from the copper ring on the underside:

The earth ring (required?) and another ring supplied with the wheel, along with the horn sandwich plate(s) that sit inside the middle of the steering wheel:

Same as above, with earth wires shown:

Back of one the horn sandwich plates, with two connectors:

A horn sandwich plate fitted into the ring supplied with the steering wheel (needed for snug fit):

Earth ring fitted on top of hub (required?):

Horn sandwich plate not fitting into hub due to earth ring (grrr):

Also, here's a link to the fitting instructions for the hub, now including the infamous paperclip approach:
M&L hub fitting instructions (in Korean!)
Where did you get your HKB boss kit from?
Kind regards,
Mike K.

Did the earth ring come with the steering wheel or the hub? My hub hasn't got that & while I have still not received my steering wheel, I doubt that it will come with one either.
If it all fits without the earth ring, try installing everything without it. If it works then you are good to go fing02.gif
BTW, here are some phone-pics of my boss kit. The copper plate at the base is set further back, so there might be the difference meaning that there is no need for the paperclip. I'll have to wait til my wheel is removed to see how it works.

Hi there OzFxCoupe,
Hmm, as I recall the earth ring was supplied with the hub. What gen Coupe do you have? Were there any fitting instructions with your hub?
I look forward to hearing from you,
Mike K.

^ I have a first gen like yours. No instructions, just a small diagram on the box that is accompanied by a ton of writing in japanese wink1.gif
I'll let you know how it goes when I do the install some time next week fing02.gif

Makings: Sorry it took so long but I only just received my steering wheel today. Dodgey ebay seller mad.gif
Anyway, it's all installed now & I think I can help you...
I've just had another look at your pics & the horn part is basically the same as the one that came with my steering wheel.
- The paperclip thing is a load of crap & is not needed for our cars anyway. When you have your stock steering wheel off you will see that it is setup very differently from the car in those "install instruction" pics in the link you posted (make sure you use a steering wheel puller too... They don't show one at all in those dodgey instructions). There is in actual fact a spring loaded "peg" that should create a contact with the copper part at the back of the hub. Just remember to grease up the copper part on the hub before you install it, otherwise it may screech when the wheel is turned while driving. Obviously make sure the hub is mounted the right way up too wink1.gif
- You can get rid of the other wires & all of the plates that you have in your pics as they are not needed & would probably make fitting the wheel & horn impossible anyway.
- You will only need to hook up a single wire (black wire coming out of the hub on yours, red on mine) to the connector on the horn (mine had two but only the middle one is of any use).
So, once the hub is bolted onto the steering column, first you need to position the new steering wheel close enough to the hub so as to be able to connect the black horn wire to the horn assembly. There is a little angled pin on the side of the horn assembly that acts as the "Earth" contact when the wheel is on. Test the horn by touching that pin against something made of metal on the hub & pushing the horn button... It should work.
The design of your horn button surround (the billet part that the Allen screws go through) is the same as mine so the install will be the same. Line up the wheel with the holes on the hub, insert the horn assembly into the middle of the wheel & lock it into position. Make sure that the logo on it is straight. Then put the billet horn button surround on over the top, line up the holes & start screwing the Aleen screws in, starting at the top so the wheel stays in place for the rest of them.
Again, check the horn is working & that's it... You're done fing02.gif
Hope this helps. I've tried to be as descriptive as possible because, even though I did take a few photos with my phone during the install, my garage is really poorly lit & all the pics came out pretty crap. Let me know if you need more info.

Hi there OzFxCoupe,
Thanks very much for the detailed write-up, I feel a bit better now ;-) The phone pics would be useful even if they are not so good, just for reference's sake...
I now feel empowered ;-) to have a crack at the sodding wheel...
Thanks again,
Mike K.
