Hey all, Im after a little help here. I still have my lovely Isotta wheel to fit, I have a M&L hub (which requires a paperclip, but more on that later), I have all the necessary fixings etc. The only thing I am lacking is knowledge (plus a 22m socket, and a torque wrench).

What I would like to know (and maybe someone who can reading wiring diagrams can help me here) is what runs to the horn button on the steering wheel? Is it just a live feed? On the horn "sandwich plates" (I have two) are one or two options for wiring, i.e. one terminal or two terminals. I assume that one is for live, and the other is for live and earth. The leading question is, do I need to earth the horn?

The hub has one lead inside it which I assume is for the live, as the current is conveyed via a copper ring on the bottom of the hub, which takes a live feed (via a paperclip!!!).

Sheesh! Who would have thought that swapping out a wheel was so problematical....

For info, my Tib is actually a Gen 1 Coupe, as I'm in the UK, which may have a bearing on things.

And as a request, for anyone who has swapped out their wheel, what hub did you use?

Kind regards,

Mike K.

just hook your horn switch up directly to the stock horn wires. the polarity shouldnt matter.

@JonGTR: Yes, I do have a loud voice and actually two middle fingers, but they won't get me through the MOT (a check of a car's roadworthiness here in the UK) 02.gif

@tibby01: Allow me to demonstrate my complete lack of knowledge when it comes to car electrics: Eh? Would I be right in assuming that there is only a live feed to the horn? Grrrr, me no understand...

and i dont understand what you're asking...lol.

but yes, there is a live feed if by that you mean an "always on" power source. it doesnt matter which way it goes through the horn switch on your new wheel though. there should be two wires running from the new wheel horn switch. you have to get those connected to the two stock horn wires(but isolated from each other and anything else metal in the area) which are further down the steering column somewhere. i really dont know how the copper plates work in the new hub so i really cant help you much mre than that. if you want to post a picture of stuff i might be able to help more. a paperclip is extremely ghetto too, and will probably end up failing soon.

you will also need a steering wheel puller to get the stock wheel off.

Thanks for the further explanation tibby01, I will post some pictures tonight (UK time) and some pics of the hub installation. I agree that the paperclip approach is wank, but from looking around at other hubs I'm seeing a similar sort of affair, i.e. copper-bottomed hubs...

Ta again,

Mike K.

I'm about to swap my steering wheel over too... Just waiting on the correct steering wheel to get posted mad.gif

Anyway, I have a cheapo ebay boss-kit that has no english markings on it or it's box that would suggest that it is in fact the right one for my car but I'm told that it will fit... Fingers crossed.

I was hoping the wheel would've arrived by now so that I could do the swap this weekend but I'm still waiting.

I'll let you know how it goes once I've done it though, as my hub boss-kit sounds like it may be the same as yours (or very similar anyway). I swapped the steering wheels on my last two cars so I don't think this'll be too tricky.

i had an issota handle once... your best bet is to get a momo.. they make them for our car. as for the lead you should only have one wire on that puppy and that is it.

@MadJohn: I assume you mean, "get a Momo *hub*"? Funny enough, I was looking at those, just not sure if the wiring of the horn would be as inept as on the M&L hub (i.e. a paperclip). I don't suppose you have a part number? I know they have a universal hub, would that suffice?

Thanks for the clarification about the horn wire as well - as far as I could see, there was only one wire within the steering column (apart from the yellow airbag cable), so that made sense to me - I'm just a n00b when it comes to the wiring part of things 02.gif

Thanks again,

Mike K.
