After messing with both, Sirius has less coverage, and DEFINATELY less ground stations (Ground re broadcasts of the satelite signal). My XM doesn't go out, at all.

I have never had my sirius go out. It works perfectly no matter where i am.

You also live in Oklahoma. Land of no mountains and nothing else to block a signal.

LOL

If you compare the pricing on them they are like almost identical. I don't know what "Extras" you are talking about having to pay for. With XM, I don't know about sirius, but you can access it online too, I listen to my XM in my office all the time now on the net.

ok, I feel kind of stupid to ask this, but since my head unit is XM ready... what all would I need to do to get XM in my car? I mean, what kind of package would I need to get, basicaly something with just an antenna, and of course a subscription, right?

any xm radio would work in any car it either goes into your tape player, runs through your fm attena, or hooks into the back of your head unit.

if you want it in your head unit (xm ready) u go and buy a xm brain that goes with the make of the head unit. there are 2 wires 1 that goes to the back of the head unit and one that is the antenna. with this setup the channels show up on the car head unit.

if u want the lil cheapy units that go for 50$ it would work too but there will be no channel listings on the head unit and u will need to plug it in the 12v cig lighter and have to mount the reciever somwere you can see and use it, they mount up sorta like a radar detector.

and u need a subscription they will tell u how to do it cuz thats all your gonna hear untill u get a subscription.

Hobgoblin, look at the XM thread I did last month, I posted some sites where you can get some GOOD prices.

I got my XM tuner, home and seperate CAR kit, all with the antennas and power adapters of course, AND 3 months of service, for 89 dollars.

I dumped XM for Sirius, and have been happy since. Way better programming, though the compression Sirius uses is a little more apparent then XM. XM was more pop oriented with a lot of channels geared towards the older demographic. Sirius has quite a few more rock stations, and those stations play a good selection of songs.

I had XM since the first day it was offered, you should have seen what they threw at me to stay with them. 6 months of free service.

Bah, I've listened to both and think the quality is the same, but XM does have a LOT more ground repeaters than Sirius.

Not to mention, Sirius has some crappy programming. Look at some of the stuff they have.

Blah.

Sirius has 5 dance stations and XM only has 4, but after seeing the quality of the equipment, hearing the differences near the mountain and such on them, XM was the clear winner for me.

I have owned both, and I can tell you they are different. The compression is more apparent. I've been playing guitar for 18 years and probably have a more refined ear for things like that, so maybe I'm at a disadvantage.....but then again what I have repreated can be found in numerous other reviews. Certain channels also get more compression than others, XM happened to compress that crap out of their rock stations and not pop. Huge turn off for me.

Ground repeaters are typically only found in large cities.....it's not even an issue for me, and a lot of the US. Even less of an issue for me because I'm rarely in a spot where I can't get service.

My crap-o-tea is rock. Sirius blows it away, hands down. The number of celebs signing with them is INSANE!! The programming is killer (I have no idea where you came up with crappy programming, but it's not. You may see one thing, but I can tell you otherwise), the DJs are quite a bit better and, Stern. They got Stern. You make think he's a creep, but he's a creep that's more than doubled their subscriptions, all in one quarter. What might this mean? It means that love him or hate him, he's gonna draw in a couple million more listeners, and no telling what other personalities along with him.

I'd be interested some of XM's subscriber numbers to see if they've declined. I see a merger in their future.
I couldn't be happier that I switched.

XM has 4 dance stations. One of them is disco. Sirius has 5 dance stations.

I really like the electronica scene. Why? Because it accepts EVERYBODY. Because someone making music that is emotional or wants to make you move, all out of NOTHING, is more impressive to me than some 22 year old weed smokin hippie screaming into a microphone wearing a zippered hood over his head.

I used to listen to rock, then I grew up.

As I listened more and more, I found that the two services have different personalities. In my opinion, Sirius' programming is aimed at a younger age demographic while XM seems to be aiming for a more mature audience. Sirius is edgier on the music selection. It appears to have more stations that focus on newer music, while with XM, I never had trouble finding a lot of music from the '70s and '80s.

But how do the two services sound when compared to one another? Well, as I stated above, I love both of these systems. I would be very happy with either. Both systems come very close to achieving CD-quality sound. I did find that XM seems to preserve the integrity of the original recording better than Sirius, however. On XM, crappy recordings sound like crappy recordings, and well-recorded material sounds like it should -- great! Sirius seems to improve the older and poorly recorded software, giving it a larger dynamic range and improved frequency response. But, on high quality recordings, I found it sounded over-processed.

I, for one, could care less about listening to a radio show from...

GRANDMASTER FLASH
TONY HAWK
LANCE ARMSTRONG
JIMMY BUFFETT
BAM MARGERA
"LITTLE STEVEN" VAN ZANDT

Or, any of the sports listed. WTF would you want to LISTEN to a game?!?!?

Especially...

ENGLISH SOCCER
HORSE RACING

Now onto the talk radio.

HOWARD STERN - Sirius has put their whole company's stake into this one. Why? he's a one trick pony. What does he do that's so entertaining? Only time I ever watched anything with him was when he had his show on E!, because you got to see some hot chicks. WHO THE HELL would want to listen to his same old gags, come ons, and other useless crap for 24 hours a day???

MARTHA STEWART - Are you friggin kidding me?

Senator BILL BRADLEY

I think tha's enough.

Only thing they have going for them in my opinion is Eminem, the sports channels they have, and Maxim channel. Other than that, who cares?

I count...

XM Radio = 247 Channels
Sirius Radio = 183 Channels

As for rock?

XM Radio = 13 Channels
Sirius Radio = 19 Channels listed

They have Reggae listed as rock. They have Jimmy Buffet's station listed as rock. Looking at some of their listings, I'd like to know how those are considered rock.

But, you can also check the "Decades" section of XM, the 60's through the 90's, are all almost all rock. They just have them listed seperately.

So that looks about even there. Should we go into christan rock?
