IMO, Kenwood makes the best entry-level decks and speakers. Sony was the best about 10 years ago, then Pioneer and now Kenwood. Clarion and Alpine tend to be better high-end units. In the price range you're looking at, look for fewer features and better internal components (higher wattage amp, 5.0V RCA's, etc...).
I'm still using my Excelon KDC-X869 from '01.
