Aw nah, I'm not interested in 1000hp machines like that. Now, they are sporty cars so equivalent parts can be more expensive, ie sensors and rocker covers and so on. However the used parts market is simply ridiculous. Half cuts, engines, upgrades, everything is floating around. Not only are you starting with a cheaper car, it's still far cheaper and easier to add more performance to the already skilled base.
So, from my own perspective, a skyline would be ruinously expensive to own. But I'm a student earning $200 a week. However, if I was able to keep a [performance car] fed and watered, I guarantee that a skyline (or whatever, any of its competitors mentioned) would be far cheaper and easier to run and modify. Like there's not even any doubt about it. In australia, non GT-R R32 and R33s, S13s, MX-5s, falcon xr6 turbos and old SS commodores are bread and butter performance cars for 17 year olds with a deathwish.
In the US market, I'm less familiar. Maybe get a cheap F body or something.

eww f-bodys...... LOL
yeah you can get an f-body or a mustang for next to nothing. but.... most of the time the cheap ones are beat to hell. i'd rather buy an import regardless.
my brother in law has a r33 gts-t that was "legilized" by motorex right when the owner got in trouble with the law. the car it self was cheap but the legalization cost was ridiculous somewhere around $20k+ and it took more than 2 years to get the car.( beause of the motorex scandal his car and other customers cars were impounded by us customs or fbi cant remember)
anyways, he manage to bet around 550hp to the wheels with stock bottom end. the r33 is by far the fastest and thrilling car i have ever driven. i probably had wet dreams for a month after driving that car.
keeping on topic... YES, there are a LOT of GK's around here. i have even seen a reeeeaaaally old lady driving one.
