1.8 cam in but now running sluggish
Me and my buddy put in my 1.8 cam yesterday and now the car seems to be having issues where it feels like its litereally being choked off at higher rpms. One minute she runs fine the next minute it feels like its being strangled to death. My only mods are aem intake with it mounted down below with the fog light cut out, underdrive pulley and stock exaust.
Only thing I could think of that could cause this is restrictive exaust since its stock or the ecu going pig rich. Could she betting too much air and not enough fuel?
I did notice that it runs ok at .25-half throttle sometimes but even then its twitchy.
Anyone know whats up or had this problem?

Maybe a stupid response but did you reset your ECU? I haven't done this mod but if the car is still thinking it has the 2.0 cam it might cause this.
Wow..this is the first time I've ever heard anyone having trouble with the 1.8 cam. Did you break in the cam in for at least 500miles before punching it?..how did you install it?

Maybe, I think it takes some driving around under NORMAL driving conditions. I don't think timing would be off cause it wouldn't be sluggish, it just wouldn't go anywhere. Is it always intermittent or just at high rpms?? If so maybe you accidentally did that "free timing belt mod" or it may be a fuel issue. 02.gif Hope fully someone has an answer here.
the cam came off a 96 elantra with 85,000 on it but trust me it was as shiney and no digs or scratches on it look brand new. i mainly figured that since it wasnt a brand new cam it didnt need a 500 mile break in but even now it runs ok sometimes and but tonight at the track it felt after I launched like someone took the motor and put a a clog in the exaust and wouldnt move past 5000rpm without hesitating and restricting.
im gonna wait till this tank of gas is empty and we'll see maybe something that little could be screwing it up.

Did you check your valve clearance after you installed it?
You runnin a stock exhaust?
What other mods you got?

i got the aem so that the fog light cover doesnt block air from hitting it, underdrive pulley and then stock exaust. it seems like its ok at 1-2nd gear when there isnt as much air rushing into the intake and up into the engine but once it gets going like 3rd and up it seems as if the ECU senses so much air that it pig riches it out. maybe i need to get my exaust done i got the high flow cat, muffler etc.. just never got around to getting the header yet and then getting it all done.
the reason I noticed this tongiht was at the track I took off but got alot of wheel hopp from the soft motor mounts and it seems like after that it woudlnt move and hesitated to a point where i pulled a 16.6 when ive been able to pull 16.1 with just the intake on minus the pulley and cam now.
it seems almost as if the knock sensors felt the wheel hopp and shaking and pulled the timing back a shitload right after it.
