You are correct -- the Mitsubishi USDM 4G63 motor has the timing belt on the driver's side.
That isn't a USDM 4G63 motor, but it could be some other variant that's offered elsewhere. Someone in this thread mentioned the EVO 6 and later engines, which are indeed a similar setup to a 4G63 but are flipped "backwards" so that the timing belt is on the passenger side.
But getting an EVO 6 motor will be expensive... You'll have to ship it from overseas, and likely the one you'll get will be used HEAVILY used and need a rebuild.
Your call I suppose, but the fabrication costs alone will still be at least $2000. And you'll still need the tranny, ECU, wiring harness and you'll still need the rebuild.
Either way it's probably at least a $5000 buildup if not more -- IF you do all the labor yourself.
I'd just as soon keep the Hyundai engine IMO.

A mitsu swap is possible with enought time, effort and money. However, for your $5000 to $10,000 that the motor, tranny, axles, ECU and fabrication would cost, you would still have a bone stock mitsu turbo motor cranking out a paltry 200 HP to the wheels at best.
For that same $5000 to $10,000, you could turbocharge your existing motor, replace/upgrade all necessary parts, and replace the ECU with a Haltec/Motec style stand alone engine managment system, and be cranking out something closer to 300 to 600 to the wheels.
Its your money, and your call.

Anything's possible, right? I think the EVO engines have more HP potential, don't you think. I'm planning to place an EVO motor into my Elantra in the future.
Besides, who told McIntyre to put two engines in his Tib? smile.gif
