I bought HID bulbs off eBay a few months (year?) back, and have loved them. Just recently the driver's side hasn't been working right. It turns on just fine, but after about 8sec. it turns off and won't come back on. If I turn my headlights off then on again, it comes on for another 8 seconds or so, then dies. What is the problem? I checked all the connections and they seem to be good (and the light stayed on when I tried bumping and wiggling all the connections) and the bulb seems to be good too since it does come on for the few seconds. So I'm guessing it's the ballast, but I want a better opinion. Also, what are my options if it is bad? Can I get the ballast individually somewhere (yes, it is eBay...) or would I be better off replacing the whole set?

It's most likely the ballast going out. You can probably buy separate ballasts, but I would go with a set of Bosch from Jay-M. I've got them in mine and the work great.

Try switching your ballasts around and if it does it on the other side its the ballast, if it still does it, either the bulb or wiring.

^^ no, switch the bulb. it's easier.. You get the same effects. There should be no reason the power supply to the ballast is interrupted, but you can check that with a multimeter when they cut off.

HIDs have Striking voltage and sustainment voltage. If the sustain does not work the higher end models are supposed to restrike. It could be either the ballast or the bulb. If the problem follows the bulb, then it is the bulb. If the problem stays at the ballast, check the power supply to the ballast then replace the ballast.

Your bulbs are probly dying. 02.gif

Yep, bulb is dead... Is it possible to use different bulbs but keep the same ballast? Or should I get a new full setup?

HID bulbs cost ass. like $90 for one damn bulb. how on earth did the bulb not work? HID's take a hell of a beating, i don't know why it would go out on yours. looks like a shabby ebay kit to me.

i upgraded my headlight and foglight fuses from 15A to 20A and they've been working great for about 1 year perfectly. before with the 15A the fuses would blow out with the car turned off but now it's all good. i hear never to upgrade fuses but i never had a problem with them.

i would get a brand new kit if i had a job. if you don't have a job then match the bulb.

I bought a extra set of bulbs from Jay-M not too long ago. He may be able to provide you a low price as well. My kit is EuroEFX, a high end brand based out of germany. Each of the EuroEFX bulbs go through a $3,000,000 machine designed to test reliability. Jay-M's bulbs tested working fine in mine. I keep a set of Jay-M's 6,000Kelvin bulbs just in case I get pulled over for a 3rd time, for having perfectly legal in the state of South Carolina, 12,000Kelvin blue as hell bulbs in my headlights smile.gif They'll also be swappable if something happens to my 12,000Ks

I thought DTN's couldnt be any bluer but even his blubs are blue laugh.gif
