hey guys i got my new crank pulley today from OBX and i was wondering what i have to do to install it. i searched here and the internet and i couldnt find anything good. one site had a rough description of the install with no pics, he said i would have to take off the pass wheel and stuff and i didnt know if it was right...lemme see if i can find it again...

yes, that is the crank pulley you are looking at.

When I did mine, I did not have access to an air wrench so I used the "blip the engine" trick.. it is a matter of knowing which way your engine rotates when running (I forget at the moment from inside the wheel well) and using a good sturdy (preferably half inch) rachet or breaker bar with the proper socket on the crank nut, place a long extension or pipe over the handle of the rachet (or breaker bar). After making sure that the extension (or pipe) will not hit anything on the car (I prefer to rest it on the ground in the direction of engine travel, so that the spin will try and leverage against the ground) Then, with the wires off of the coils (or plugs, your choice) gently blip the starter so that at most, the engine moves a litte. It does not take a lot to break it loose and you do not want it coming off when the engine is spinning..

wheel, the plastic shroud that protects the engine, and the belts... and you are ready to go.

 

ok thanks.. i assume i will have to get new belts? how do i find out what size belt to get? any special brand?

 

You're probably gonna have to get a belt that's smaller in diameter then the stock one(s). The tension pullys are adjustable on both belts (the alternator is the tension pully for the second belt, the first belt tension pully is located by the crank) so it dosn't have to be perfect..just make sure you have another vehicle to get to an AutoZone or similar store.

 

ok thanks i think i just about got it now.. but about how much smaller than stock? do you recomend bringing it into autozone and saying, " i need two belts that are a little smaller than this one?" anybody have quantitative estimations on belt diameters? or is it just a general "size" smaller?

 

That's exactly what I did, I brought the belts to AutoZone and asked if they had any belts that are a bit smaller..just keep the receipts just in case you have to bring them back

 

alright man thanks i should be all set when i do it in a couple weeks...maybe ill write up a DIY when i do it.. im gonna have to wait until i go home though..darned it, i just went home.. if only it would have came on stupid friday i could have done it over the weekend... spring break here we come..

 

You shouldn't have any troubles..just make sure the alternator pully (the tensioner pully for the second belt) is tight enough..if not, it'll squeel like a little piggy..wink1.gif
