Real quick question,
Will I need the transmission control computer off of a manual for the swap I'm doing? Is there even a TCM in our cars for manuals? Sorry for the stupid question, just trying to make sure I have EVERYTHING I need before I start tearing her apart. This is probably the dumbest question on here, but I just have to be sure.

Yes there is and I think you will need it. Its located to the left of the glove box.

No! The TCM is for the T. The ECM is for the E. When you only need brains for the E, the TCM will miss its partner, and say to the ECM "the T stopped talking to me!" On a 97, it's discrete boxes, and the ECU should be the same-enough if not the same PN to use the old one.

If you can wait just a liiiiitle while longer, keep an eye on my "follow me" transmission swap thread; I just got what I think will be enough for new clutch money, which was the main hold-up for my 2000 elantra (read: tib w/ different trim)

This is what I know. There is a transmission computer. Automatic (AT) and Manual (MT). It is located behind the dash to the left of the glove box. I would assume you need to get one for a manual but theres a chance the AT one will work for manual seeing as it still reads the speed and stuff the same, just when it outputs a shift, nothing will happen.

 

alright sounds good man. I've read somewhere (i believe the DIY thread) that you may get a CEL with the ECU saying wtf happened to the transmission? Maybe getting the MT one will fix this? Either way, its on the way, and I'll have peace of mind.

I pulled the brake pedal, clutch pedal/MC, ECM and brackets and that's it.

NO TCM for the gearbox. TCM for slushbox cars ONLY.

 

lol stocker. So you're saying there isn't a TCM for manuals? So do I just simply take out and not use the auto TCM then?

The manual transaxle is so many gears and a reverse switch. The auto is a maze of hydraulic valves, solenoids, clutches, etc. IIRC you need to cut 1 wire to the ECM after the swap. Either way, I'm determined to find out, barring any further acts of God (been broke & sick recently boo).
