The flywheel/crank snout diameter change data from 1.8L to 2.0L is in my manual conversion thread, including details about when a spacer is useful and when it just won't bolt up. I am using the flywheel that came on the 1.8L on my 2.0L. I am not sure what should be the outside diameter for the 1.6L flywheel, but that would be a real kick in the head if it were just the wrong part.
I'm not sure where you would find the dimensions or part numbers for the 1.6L flywheel and/or ring gear. How useful is the parts technician at your local dealership?
I'm getting a 404 not found error on those images when I copy/paste, and they didn't load into the forum with your img tag . . . there is a photobucket DIY around here somewhere if you have difficulty uploading photos.

Ok if you are using the flywheel off a 1.8 it should be the same as the 1.6 because the lywheel has 1.6&1.8 marked on it
I was wondering if the engine plate was different on the 1.8 and 2.0 engines that determined starter location.

What year is your car this is important. If it is the wrong year you can possibly get the adapter plate and you problems might just go away.

thanks for that link. i'll check my starter and take pictures to show ho it engages.
how do i determine the year engine i have?
where is the engine code located? and what else do i check?
also could you guys pm me your numbers so we could talk it over.... thanks
also if i could get some measurements of the distance of ring gear diameter. also the depth of the bolt holes on a stock flywheel, i'd really appreciate that info

Actually i don't know what year it is...I got the engine from a pile of scrap iron ready to be dumped. I bought it from an old lady for about 100 bucks. then scrapped the head and block and bought all new oem parts from the dealer. all performance parts were sourced from importperformanceparts.net.
I never knew there was a differnce in cranks and if that pertains to me....

Starter solenoid? If the starter solenoid were bad, then the starter would not make contact with the flywheel, or maybe just partially and make that noise which you describe.
