From what I have seen with the motor in the garage they are semi interference. Cause the head has both valves that come flat down (intake side) and valves that come in at an angle (exhaust) kinda screwie if you ask me. The pistons are weird too. Well the 1.8's They are domed with an angled side for the valves to come down into the motor....

QUOTE (yamaha @ Jun 2 2007, 07:07 AM)
So, I realigned the crankshaft pulley notch to 3pm, and retightened everything. Tried to start it up,

That is where you bent the valves. 180 out is not just turning the crank 180 degress.. but it needed a full 360 degree turn. The otto cycle engine (regular gasoline engine) actually works on 720 degrees of rotation per firing sequence. suck, squish, bang, blow. TheCrank makes two turns to complete that proceedure. Chances are, when you originally had the cams timed, the intake valves were open during the time when the engine would have been blowing (or exhausting), this would have the exhaust valves open during the suck sequence.

By turning the engine 90 degrees.. you had the intakes open when the piston was at the top of it's travel.. bending the valves.

As stated above: ALWAYS remove your plugs and turn the engine over by hand before starting it whenever doing cam or cam belt service. I even do it when replacing the cam belts just to safe.

^^^
I honestly never knew that... I always just assumed that automotive engines were 2 stroke instead of 4 stroke.

You know you have to adjust the tapits if you change the camshafts right?
Camshafts are only recommended to installed by certified machanics it's not DIYable.
Hope you do not hear the ticking noises coming inside from your engine head.

cams are DIYable.. there are just a lot of "depends" on them. The intake cam I give a 4 out of 10. The exhaust cam I give a 6. This is on the Hyundai Beta.

My fiat.. cams are about a 6 as they are not interconnected by a chain, but the cam housings have to come off of the head (the head is actually three pieces not including the covers and then the cams have to slipped out the back of the housings.

BMW straight 6s I give an 8 as you need a special tool to remove the cam so you do not break it from the tappet pressure.

Camshaft install on the Beta is easy, it was my own fault that I had the crank 180 out. I will be pulling the head this Thursday, and then getting a new head from a member on here.

yea.. 180 out will not hurt anything.. but when you tried to realign and went 90 out.. that was when your intake valves perished.

double and triple check next time.. and like I said, rotate the engine by hand a few revolutions to check for binding.
