^^haha I just owned myself so hardcore..
so I got the new belt on fine and dandy with the new flange ordered from hyundai. Ran great no slipping timing belt idle was a little high but I adjusted it with the throttle body screw and loosening the throttle cable.
Drove it for about 30 miles for some errands around town checked all the fluids and fresh oil and etc. etc. Passed the check-up just fine timng belt wasn't touching anything and was exactly centered on the cam pulley and the whole pulley system so I put the timing belt cover on (upper half) and started my drive to the Grand Canyon (for a memorial service).
About 10 minutes outside of my town the engine just stops running (not electrical because all lights are still working), rpms drop to zero, power steering is lost, etc. etc. I didn't know what to think (actually I did, but didn't want to think it... LOL) so I check the engine bay seems fine nothing popping out at me. It's a little hotter than normal..
I pull the timing belt cover (upper half) and see the timing belt RIPPED TO SHREDS. Completely obliterated, like no other...
I have pictures but no way of uplaoding yet (it's horrible, I get sick looking at them..) ugh..
So yea, my engine dead isn't it?
fawk this engine..
(what the hell would have caused the timing belt to just up and disentegrate...)???? AHH!
The tension was fine, no obstructions in the way, ran FINE for 30+ miles and then out of nowhere breaks..
anybody else have problems with a kspec timing belt?
I REALLY hope kspec wouldn't sell me defective or "weak" timing belts..

Ehh, we only sell brand new OEM parts from Mobis man. Unless it's a defective belt that came out from Mobis, I don't know what the issue is.

Seriously, I am so f***ed because of this belt. I didn't HEAr anything bad when the car just died, but the timing belt is OBLITERATED meaning the valves must of hit the pistons, right? ..bending the valves.. damaging the pistons..
I'm going to take off the shredded belt, clean the disater area and put BACK ON the already chewed up TRUSTWORTHY NON-KSPEC belt and see if the damn engine even runs.
If it does I'm going to get a new OEM Hyundai Timing Belt from an AMERICAN dealership and hope for the best (then it's new motor time). I don't know why I even support kspec anymore..

Dude, seriously, stop talking shit about Kspec. It's not our fault you either...
A. Didn't install it correctly.
B. Don't know what you are doing.
C. Something else broke in your car.
I could care less if you support Kspec, but the OEM parts we sell are the same you'd get elsewhere from a Hyundai dealer. They are made by the same folks that make them for the factory built engines. No one else has had a problem with the kits we've sold. I just checked, we've sold 126 beta 1 kits since they have been on the site. Only issue we've had is folks ordering the wrong kit and buying a Beta 1 instead of Beta 2. I guess the belts are different.
Look at all the issues you had changing your own belt. This is the reason mine is getting done at the dealer.
I'd like to point out man, I've offered to help out in any way you need. Verify part #'s, whatever, but you haven't taken me up on any of it or even posted of any problems on our site about it. My personal opinion is, if it's shredded, your belt wasn't put on correctly and slid off one side or the other, or maybe was too tight and shredded.

Actually it sorta of is kspec's fault. Everthing I got in their timing belt kit was either defective or not what I ordered (I specifically talked to them through e-mails and made sure to get everything for a beta1 1.8L revA tiburon). They explained all the differences in the parts (water pump has dimple instead of bump to hold pulleys in place, timing belt length, tensioner and idler pulleys, no AC belt, correct accessory size belts).
The only thing they got right was the accessory belts for the water pump/alt and water pump/power steering pump. The timing belt itself blew up for no reason, the water pump was for a beta 2, the idler pulley received had a defective bearing, did not spin freely even when lubricated, the tensioner did not spin freely under tension and had rough spots on the "smooth" side of the pulley the belt contacts.
Let's see what went "wrong" during my timing belt install that supposedly makes me incompetent to work on vehicles..
1.) The whole purpose of this timing belt swap was to figure out why my timing belt was slipping a little bit to the left. I know NOW it is because last time the timing belt was changed by NOT me the flange was not re-installed. After taking pictures and posting images on this site asking for help I got "sorry, dunno what to tell ya" and "I dunno mang" which is no problem. It's not your guys responsibility to spoon feed me through this install/swap. But what gets me is all the "oh yea that flange" and "yea, I remeber that now" after I already figured it out... LOL
how the hell was I supposed to know about that flange when it wasn't there when I took everything off? That doesn't make me incompetant and set me back quite a bit.
2.)stipped motor mount bolts (aged tiburon gets stripped studs, needed new bolts, not really my fault.
3.)stripped hole in head from removing and reinstalling tensioner pulley so many god damn times, yea that's my fault but it would have happened to anyone. fixed with helicoil.
4.) perfectly installed and tensioned (to HMA specifications) timing and accessory belts. RAN FINE FOR HALF A DAY (30+ miles) and was inspected after running for that period of time. 10 miles after the inspection the timing belt suddently rips to shreds..
I don't know, maybe the belt suddenly decided to rip itself to shreds, or maybe the belt was not made for my vehicle..
either way this is the result

whether I like it or not.
Sorry if you got a little butt hurt jeremy, that a respectful paying and supportive kspec customer hasn't had a single satisfying business deal (whether it's shipping [i.e. bad packaging, timely, wrong parts arriving] defective parts arriving). Although I do have to say when contacted kspec resolved most issues as best as could (like replacing broken taillight lenses after they broke in shipment when somebody packaged them with a throttle body and nothing inbetween them... duh.)
So I have some bent valves, metal shavings in the head, maybe damaged pistons, and need a new valve cover (defective from scratches and broken metal underneath). all because of this belt. wether it was my fault or the belt's, what's done is done and i have no tiburon anymore.
..saweet.

I no longer need to know how to reset timing on a beta (hence the title..)
So lock it and go HERE for more details and my DIY: Changing Timing Belt
