Buy a can of engine degreaser and spray it all over the engine and that will break/get rid of the big shtuff. You can get it from autozone. It's great shtuff. This sound really bad but I go and do a quick mist/spray with my garden hose over the engine after the degreaser. Then if your really meticulous bust out the toothbrush and scrub!

I use WD40 on the hoses...its' supposed to make them last longer. I've even used it to clean the engine department when I've run out of degreaser..works OK..

WD-40, brake cleaner, gas... endless options. Brake cleaner is some strong stuff. My advice is to tape a straw on the end of the brake cleaner cap where the little spray hole is, so you get a more concentrated spray and it doesn't go everywhere.

I even had a friend that used some sort of tire cleaner. I had my doubts but it did a good job

In Ukraine in car wash they offer to clean engine. But after cleaning (with spray or other detergents) they use water under high pressure to wash it.
They do not guarantee that your engine will start after that wash.

I'm afraid to clean my engine this way :-/

Alex, I would definately try some brake cleaner with the little straw. Just don't get it on your paint... because it'll eat it pretty fast.
