Free Cam Sprocket Mod !
Well I was doing lots of thinking about this and I realized that the adjustment I made using my cam sprocket can be done using the stock cam sprocket...
Basically what I did was to retard(oops, i mean advance) my cam timing by about 1 tooth on the sprocket...
what that adds up to is a simple adjustment that can be done without buying the OBX adjustable sprocket...
Here is what you have to do...
1. remove the upper cam sprocket cover. (4 bolts)
2. Loosen the tensioner bolt.
3. pull the timing belt out of the way,
4. turn the cam sprocket clockwise just 1 tooth..
5. re-assemble in the reverse order.
That will yield about 10 degrees of retard(oops, i mean advance) on the cam sprocket, and boost the top end power without the need of an adjustable cam sprocket !
The benefits of this are:
#1. its free.
#2. its so easy to do, you dont even have to remove the cam sprocket or even loosen its bolt...
#3. it gives a nice top end boost !
Here is a shot of the stock cam sprocket with the cover removed...
I think that at some point in the future, i might swap back to the stock sprocket since i think that its lighter than the OBX unit... in that case i will complete the mod listed here. smile.gif
Thanks in advance. smile.gif

I'm a little vague on ignition timing vs hp, but wouldn't this only help out on a boosted engine? When your boosting and running lean you want to avoid detonation so then you would retard your timing. But on a n/a engine that runs super rich from the factory wouldn't you want to advance your timing a little?? Someone correct me if I 'm wrong.
hmm...
i think you might be confused here... this mod has no effect on "ignition" timing...
this is a mechanical mod that retards the cams in relation to the crank...
it has no effect on ignition timing because that is controlled by the crank angle sensor / ecm .. we are not touching either of those devices..
this will help make more power from 3000 rpms and up because it just sets the cams to flow more air higher in the rev range than what the stock cams are set to at the factory.
I hope this helps to clear things up for you.

kinda like the theory of vtec, without keeping the bottom end as you do with with wtec. you notice any idling issues with this ford? i will definately be doing this soon.
ever think of trying out one more tooth?

this really help?!.... how much can you notice the difference?!.... any change to the time of 1/8 or 1/4?.....
any waste of fuel more than the normal o rsomething like that?..
thanks

QUOTE (tibby01)
more air = more fuel
so yeah, there will be more fuel needed, but i dont know if it would be enough to notice a difference.

ok... but you said that you dont know if it would be enough to notice the difference in what?... in MPG or in notice the HPs?!...
sorry.. thanks again

I'm not sure about that last one? I wouldn't touch anything yet, messing with timing could mean a bent valve or something. In theory this sounds like an awesome mod. But I am leary about messing with gears and teeth and whatever. Will this not mess up timing a little if you run in the higher rpm range, like 5000-6000. I don't want to sound like an @$$ but it all just sounds too easy.
