As far as I know, I have a non-cvvt head. It's on my built motor and I've started it. It's been so long, I can't remember where I got the Beta 2 head. Where do I look to make sure?

You will have an oil control valve if you are cvvt (red arrow)

Also if I'm not mistaken, they have different style valve covers. Think the cvvt valve cover has 12 bolts while the non-cvvt has 13. I could be wrong as I'm basing this off my XD.

Then there's the big goofy sprocket on the exhaust cam that will give it a way.

I should answer the initial post by saying that once this confusion is straightened out, I'd definitely be in for one. However, I hope they design it carefully so the gear doesn't accidentally loosen up.

By looking at the pic of your head, I am going to say that is a cvvt one. I looked at my non-cvvt head and there are differences.

Disregard the bay as it's a work in progress.. ha

Underneath the cover would be a phaser on the exhaust.

I definitely would have noticed that on the exhaust cam, however I received the head and cover from another member and do not recall who, or if they could have sent me a cvvt head. You're right though, it's a later model head, but the holes were not machined for cvvt.

So, I definitely have a Beta 2 head, however for whatever reason the cam and r-side gear did not fit the cam journals of the head. There was a slight difference of the cam near the intake cam gear.

This is getting interesting.. I'm going to go home and pull the valve cover over my XD elantra as it should be a cvvt and confirm if it is or not. I guess it could be possible that the later beta II non-cvvt heads are different.

I can confirm that beta II head on my RD came off an 03 elantra and isn't cvvt.

Pics will be up later.

Jon, is there any chance you can pull the valve cover and take a pic as well? And in regards to your rside, did it fit on the beta II cam but just wouldn't sit in the head itself?

I've forgotten a lot since then to be 100% sure. But, I wanna say that the cam ends were completely different in that the sprocket would not swap from one to the other because of the diameter difference. And then, when I tried to just put the cam that had the r-side sprocket on it, into the head, it wouldn't go in the head because there was a lip on the end that was machined differently and wouldn't sit in the head where the last journal is closest to the sprocket.
