Those engines were 2.0L with 1.8L and shaved block deck. One had Beta I head with 1.8L Intake cam, port, polish and shaved.
The other had a Beta II head ith a Beta I exhaust cam, port, polish and shaved.
They both had almost all the exterior addons and one was Haltech and the other was Mega.

Yeah, it's surprisingly not that bad.. but it's running way to rich at idle. Got a LC-1 wideband, and it's ideling at about 11 AFR.
It's power curve is not to bad.. okey at the low and mid end, but really kicks in above 4500 rpm (almost like a turbo boost). The engine responds much better to high rpm's. However.. I can se from the wideband that with a good map, It's much more gains to get out from it.

Ah
that explains it.. but that engine work is probably way more expensive than a camswap.

The prices you were looking at for just the regrinds at your local shops, I would expect for a first class head rework. And with the head redone, it's hardly "stock" regardless of what other mods the car may (not) have. These heads have a LOT of potential for gains, because Hyundai barely did anything not required to make the parts inside fit.
From a stock Beta I head I disassembled:

Possibly the worst, IMO: huge casting flash sticking right up in the short side radius on the intake. Just taking this out should get you a measurable performance increase!

LOTS more pictures here: In related news, I'm the sad clown . . . three years since I started on that head, and almost as many since it stalled out because I would rather buy kids shoes & toys & whatnot than four intake valves and a seal/gasket set, plus a set of piston rings.
I want to run this head on my engine. I looked at the pictures again and want it so bad I can taste it, but the next $500 freed up goes to . . . (drumroll) a new water softener

Oh, not sure what price I can expect for a head rework over here.. but I'm pretty sure it's quite bad.
On the other hand.. those pictures and your thread were real inspiring
guess my next project would be head rework
too bad you weren't able finish it .. I would love too see the gains you could get from it.Btw.. here is some other videos from my tiburon after the camswap

Hmm.. black smoke, running a bit rich ..

Oh it will be finished, possibly within a year. For now, it sits on my bench, waiting.
Reviewing the pictures I posted, that last is flash in the long radius of a turn, but IIRC that sort of nasty thing was also on the short side of an intake runner. Very very bad. With that head it is amazing Hyundai got the power they did from these engines.

i heart this thread. it is re-inspiring me to do an NA build.
sonique - moar! do you have any driving videos? or idle videos with good sound? or anything? i'm really interested. stocker, wowee. i didn't realise the beta 1 head was that bad. i'm always apprehensive when people say they ported their head, but with casting like that, it is definitely understandable. iirc hyundai fixed up the casting/machining for the beta II, also they ran with tighter tolerances. so perhaps a beta II might not get as many gains.
hell, your head there might just have been cast long after lunch. tolerances aside though, there is clearly work to be done.
