I've seen really good ones go for $65 bucks, but normally they are between $20 and $40 bucks.

Your mechanic is thinking of a Spring Compressor STAND. It is a spring comressor that is free standing. They are nice, but only if you are going to be doing a TON of spring/strut changes.

Just the "standard" cheap bolt style spring compressors will do the trick for occassional/shadetree mechanic use.

Like Random said the $300 compressors are usually free standing or wall mount units. The smaller ones that you see for around a $100 are usually a clamp type set up which hooks to the top and bottom of the spring, then you tighten a bolt which compresses the spring. As easy as it sounds you have to be VERY carefull, if it is not compressing the spring evenly it may pop out of the compressor.

I'm not trying to scare you away from this,I'm just letting you know so you take precautions and you don't get hurt.

WHATEVER YOU DO just don't stand above the strut with it pointing at you when you compress the spring onto it!!! I have heard of people have the spring pop off the strut, hit them square in the chest, and die from it OR get seriously injured if they're lucky. That's all I have to add to this topic.

I've heard those same tales. I think they fall under the catagory of "urban legend". Don't get me wrong, you can get HURT if the top of the strut comes off with the spring unrestrained, or if the spring compressor slips off, it will go flying. However I seriously doubt anyone has "died" as a result of one of these mishaps.

Moral of the story, just be careful out there folks! wink
