looks like the ukhcc has sussed it, euro cars may not have a accel sensor at all. (thats maybe why we have that grey plug blanked off). thats another one for the american/euro differences list.

link to ukhcc debate.

many thanks for all your help.

I was just looking at your engine compartment.. you do not have a Mass Air Flow Sensor like a North American Spec car...so that may well be a MAP related sensor.

courtesy of mjnewton on the ukhcc forums....

"A bit of background: the ODB-II spec and requirements govern the stringent emissions control (amongst other things) for all cars (>'96) in the US. Part of the spec requires that misfires are positively detected - traditionally this is achieved through a number of different methods and in the case of our Coupes is done via the readings from the camshaft/crankshaft sensors. Each cylinder firing produces a near-instantaneous acceleration of said items and thus if an acceleration is not detected then a misfire can be concluded. However... whilst this is good enough to generally detect misfires it is not accurate enough to avoid false positives, particularly in the case of driving over rough ground when such accelerations will either not occur anyway or will cause misfire-style gaps to be 'hidden in the noise'. Thus, an accelerometer (bolted onto the chassis) is used to enable 'rough ground' conditions to be detected and the misfire detection routines skipped.

As you know, the UK does not subscribe to the full ODB-II spec (hence the lack of CELs on the majority of cars/models) and thus the 'full' misfire detection requirement is negated/omitted. Hence, the accelerometer is surplus to requirements and thus not fitted.

Now onto the manifold pressure sensor - whether you have a MAF or not is irrelevent - don't fall into the trap of thinking that this is the only difference between US and UK models - it's not, particularly where emissions control is concerned. Furthermore, the MAF is not located on the engine side of the butterfly hence its location is entirely unsuited to detect manifold pressure - apart from wide-open-thottle conditions when the manifold pressure can be determined from the intake pipe.

Thus, the bottom line is that the orientation/position of the pressure sensor is irrelevant as long as, as mentioned earlier, the connecting pipe is not kinked etc."
