8k does not equal half of 31k. At that iirc the 1994 price was closer to 40k (would have been vSpec), the 89 price was mid-low 30s per modern exchange rate.
Add to that the current yen price of a Japanese market BNR32 (roughly 350k median). (Getting one new in the states in 1994 would have been far FAR more expensive than any other super car on the market at that time, as any crash testing hadn't and for that matter hasn't yet been completed. It would still be another half of a decade before the R33 tests were done.)
