Ballrub,

Have you done any tests on the Supercharger? What is the actual hp on this kit running on an American car (Hyundai Tiburon 2.0L) and 93 octane gasoline?

Thanks,

Anton

Sorry fellas...I've been pretty busy this last week, and have some more updates for you (will post Monday), and try to answer some of your individual questions.

In the meantime, I will leave you with this teaser:

Import Racer! Magazines Tibby got over 200-HP to the wheels with the AEM intake! I'll have dynos posted as soon as I get some more ink for my dyno printer!

Hey Ballrubber,

Are there any plans in the works to add headers, BBTB, and/or full exhaust?

Sorry...but we've been pretty busy around here of late, and promise to try to reply to your questions in a more timely manner. first, some updates, then I'll try to answer your questions.

We are slowly getting settled in to our new facility, and are still in the midst of completing our fabrication shop, relocating lifts and dynos, drywall, painting and the like, but have had enough time to get in some R&D on several applications and felt it time to give you all an update on our 1.8L/2.0L Hyundai forced-induction systems.

We currently offer both a Turbo w/Intercooler system, and a Supercharger system for the 1.8L/2.0L Hyundai Elantra and Tiburon. After test fitting and tuning of several vehicles, here's where our applications are at now:

1.8L/2.0L (I4--BETA-I/BETA II engines) `96-`03 Hyundai--Tiburon/`96-`00 Elantra Turbo w/Intercooler Kit

The Turbo w/intercooler kit has been meticulously engineered for optimum performance and reliability. The suggested retail price is $2600 plus shipping from Southern California, and we now ship Fed-Ex ground service.

This system uses a Mitsubishi TD04H-15T turbo, and includes the exhaust manifold, fifth fuel injector, fuel pressure regulator, a front-mount air-to-air intercooler and plumbing, and all the required parts and mounting hardware, plus a "Unichip" controller (already pre-set) to mount with your Engine Control Module to maximize performance (electrical wiring is required), and will work on both MAP and MAF engines, without any other modifications required (except you will need to purchase 2 head gaskets for the decompression plate supplied). All kits are pre-assembled as far as possible.

Performance improvements for the turbo kit are approximately 75+ HP & 90+ ft/lbs of torque "to-the-wheels" @ 10 lbs./psi boost. (1.8L figures will be lower due to lower baseline figures, but the percentage of increase should be the same.) Dyno charts on U.S vehicles will be available soon. Our systems as an aftermarket item, carries a "1-Year / Unlimited Mileage Warranty "against defects in materials and workmanship.

Turbo Kit Updates as of 10/19/02

1) We are working on the re-location of the first catalytic converter (or sourcing a smaller replacement cat) if CARB certification is determined feasible (will know in the next few weeks).

2) We have discovered a few previous kits sold with Fuel Pressure Regulators set at incorrect lower psi, and will now check all FPR settings here prior to shipment.

3) After reviewing the "pre-programmed" maps on the Unichip supplied, have found them to be quite adequate for U.S. smogged vehicles, and have decided no changes or revisions are necessary for this application.

4) Having discovered no opening large enough in the front of our `03 Elantra (applies to `01-to-`03) to plumb the intercooler piping, have made the decision to re-design and convert to our "AQUA-COOLED" liquid-to-air intercooler, and should aide in getting CARB approval (if cat issue can be resolved).

5) If catalytic and CARB issues can be resolved with the new "re-engineered Aqua-cooled" version, will make the decision to either discontinue the original "air-to-air" version, or decide to offer as a separate application.

6) Once the basic kit is ready, will re-evaluate the price of the kit, and plan to look into development of "stage one", and possible "stage two" upgrades.

This kit was recently re-tuned and dyno'd on our Dyna-Pak wheel dyno, on a `99 Tiburon (BETA I-engine w/over 60,000 miles on it, using 91 octane gas--no front cat) and got 180.6-HP and 198.9-ft/lbs of torque "to-the-wheels" at 11-lbs/psi of boost! This was our first kit ever installed in the U.S. (July of `01)!

1.8L/2.0L (I4--BETA I engine) `96-`02 Hyundai--Tiburon/`96-`00--Elantra Supercharger Kit

Our supercharger system also has a suggested retail price of $2600, uses the Eaton MP45 (4th gen.) "roots type" blower, and comes with an additional fuel injector, fuel pressure regulator, belts, hardware and everything else needed, plus a "Unichip" controller (already pre-set) to mount with your Engine Control Module to maximize performance (electrical wiring is required), and will work on both MAP and MAF engines, without any other modifications required. All kits are pre-assembled as far as possible.

The supercharged kit improvements are 40+ HP & 50+ torque @ 4 lbs./psi boost (PLEASE NOTE: These are S.African vehicles tested with 96 octane gas, and no smog devices--U.S. vehicles increases will be slightly lower, and will update as soon as we've tested here). 1.8L figures will be lower due to lower baseline figures, but the percentage of increase should be the same--engine has a different bore & stroke. Dyno charts on U.S vehicles will be available soon.

The supercharger system has not been CARB certified yet, but are waiting for an appointment now, and should pass testing and receive approval within the next couple of months (making it retroactively applicable to any kits sold prior to certification). We are in talks with Hyundai now, and as soon as each (both turbo and supercharger) is CARB certified, and with their approval, plans are to notify all of their dealers as to the availability of these kits (as a possible dealer installed option), and that it will not void any factory warranties. Our systems as an aftermarket item, carries a "1-Year / Unlimited Mileage Warranty "against defects in materials and workmanship.

Supercharger Kit Updates as of 10/19/02

After trying to "test fit" on our `03 Elantra, have discovered that the (I4) BETA II engines are using a slightly different intake manifold and different fuel injectors (among other things), and have made the decision to tool up a new intake manifold for the `01-`03 Elantra/`03 Tiburon, and anticipate it's availability around February of next year.

VerdeShark98...

As mentioned, we are re-engineering the turbo kit with a new upside-down "U" flange cast piece that will allow us to accomodate an aftermarket high-flow cat (will probably be included with kit), and are looking at changing over to our Aqua-cooler. If (and that's a big IF) it is determined passing smog is feasable after testing and tuning here, will submit for CARB testing.

JAWS 021...

I won't know what will be included in a "stage two" upgrade, until we do a "stage one" upgrade first. There is a possibility that we may have a "matched" exhaust systems for our kits, along with CAI, and possible more ECU management (because of our long association with OE's worldwide, we have access to the new "encrypted" [tamper proof] ECU technology coming out soon!!). Plus, most of our other OE turbo kits sold elswhere, run about 10-lbs/psi of boost, but as you pointed out, we may have to "tone down" the boost to meet CARB requirements, but have high hopes that if the cat is placed "just right", and with the Aqua-cooler, we could squeak through!

long...

It's sock "pixies"!

lantrluvr...

We have a client in Cypress/Greece, who has asked us to develop a supercharger package for the 1.6L Accent (due to high tax tariffs on larger displacement engines). I will keep you all posted on this project, but don't expect to have any new information on it's development until sometime in December.

cysco00...

It IS possible to "re-tune", or "custom tune" the Unichip, but would have to be done either at our facility, or at an authroized Unichip dealer. They (and us) have the software to tune, and cannot be done on your own. But, I want to point out, that would void our warranty. I know "some" people have suggeested that we get rid of the 5th injector and just supply larger injectors, but that would sacrifice reliability and driveability in our opinion. Remember, Alpine is in the business (and has been for over 22 years) of making OE and smog compliant forced induction systems, and our basic kits will always be a little on the "tame" side. We may decide in the "stage one" and possible "stage two" upgrades that larger injectors are needed, and would suggest that one should wait for Alpine to develop and test these upgrades before attempting to "guess" those upgrades yourselves.

Besides, as mentioned, we have access to this new "encrypted" ECU technology which will be applied to new systems developed, and may decide to replace the Unichip with this unit, which can be tuned over the internet via a laptop for "official" upgrades (and possible "unoffical" custom tuning)!

Anton...

We have Tony's (random) other Tibby in here (his was the white `99 in the background shot of the Import Racer Tibby) with the supercharger on it, and will be evalutaing the Unchip program on this, and tuning, and post the dyno results as soon as we get them. I'll have Tony's `99 Tib with the turbo kit dyno sheets up later today, and the Import Racers magazines up too (including the AEM intake dyno run), once I get scanned in to my computer.

Hootie...

We have another V6 Tibby, that HKS has right now, and they are developing some goodies that should push theirs close to 300-HP, but they haven't shared their R&D with us yet, but will keep you all posted as soon as we know.

turbulence...

As mentioned above, both the Turbo w/Intercooler kit, and the Suprcharger kit (as they stand now) retail for $2600. I am expecting a $200 price increase on all of our applications in January (have finally gotten a handle on our landed costs, and have to figure in our overhead with more employees). I would also like to point out that the re-engineered kits will probably be priced higher as well! And yes, we do plan on upgrades for both of these systems too!

ballrub i have owned and had both BETA I and BETA II engines in my car
(i got a beta I)

The intake manifold is swappable between the 2... i drove with a beta I manifold on my beta II engine for about 3 weeks until i blew up

The difference between the injectors is (size i think) and the connectors...

You should be able to use the same manifold/supercharger on the beta II

Only differences would be the Idle air bypass
