is it alright to run charged air through the MAF?

or would it be better to attach the maf to the intake of a boosted setup?

DO NOT run boosted air through your MAF, it will destroy it!! Always have your MAF before the turbo on the intake side. The small filiment in the MAF is quite delicate and is not ment for pressurized air.

Maybe having the filter further from the maf is better....

^^ Yep. I believe the Beta uses the hot-wire MAF sensor, where a platinum hot wire gets heated up and the temperature is measured by a thermistor.

Interesting thing about hot-wire MAF sensors is that the platinum hot wire is maintained at a constant temperature IN RELATIONSHIP to the thermistor. The only reason why you probably don't want to slap that MAF next to the hot turbo or block, is that you could end up melting the thermistor...which would be bad.
