The performance reason for having an external over an internal wastegate is as said previously to run more boost, the ecternal springs can be changed and adjusted to desired levels and secondly to prevent boost creep as internal waste gates can not always flow enough gas to prevent boost from continuing to rise.
External wastegates can still be plumbed back into the exhaust and it is unlikely to affect its performance either way.
