Default Custom Turbo..Good Idea??

Hey I was talking to a few buddies of mine that have bought relatively cheap turbos off ebay and modded them to fit their cars...I was just wondering if there were only certain turbos that the 2gen Tiburon is compatible with, or if its possible to mount a small turbo in there with some custom work... (Mitsubishi or Garett). Is this possible, because I cant be dishing out over 2 grand for an Alpine kit, but I really wanna go turbo. I know this has probably been asked before, but my searched returned nothing. Thanks guys.

A custom kit in my book is more fun to do that just bolting on a kit. I don't know about the Tibs but I have done it with a 2k1 Accent 1.6L, and am VERY pleased with the results,

if you can't go over 2g's you probably shouldn't be goin turbo unless you really are'nt lookin to add a whole lot of power, i don't know as much as some of the guys on here, but i am spending for 5g's plus in parts alone, and that's just doing it right, i'm not going gonzo either.

Maintaining a turbocharged car can be quite expensive. Especially in the tuning that it takes. I would rather spend 2k on N/A parts than taking the chance on the turbo.

I'm looking at around US$2000 just in parts for a basic 7psi intercooled kit. Here's what you're gonna need:
Turbo
Manifold to bolt to said turbo
Turbo-back exhuast (i.e. downpipe, cat, and cat-back)
Intake piping (radiator hoses work, or OEM parts from other cars, or custom aluminum piping)
Intercooler (check ebay for deals, or call Spearco, etc)
Blow off Valve (again ebay is cheapest)
Performance clutch (KORE, SR, Clutchmasters, ACT)

And you'll need some way of controlling your fuel curves and possibly ignition timing. This is where it gets expensive and tricky, mainly because its the most important part of a good turbo setup AND it determines whether or not the engine lives or dies. It could be as simple as upgrading injectors, it could be as hard as running a full standalone aftermarket ECM (haltech, etc).

For 8psi... You should be fine with a 255L/hr walbro fuel pump and a s-afc or some other piggy back computer to adjust the fuel curves to meet the engine's new demands. I'd seriously look into the GReddy Emanage; its relatively cheap and can do both fuel and ignition timing.

i'm not trying to show-up skierd's post, but he's right. i have the safc. in hindsight, i wish i'd gotten the greddy emanage. for the added feature of ignition timing, it's worth the $100 or whatever you'll spend. boOm, wtf is wrong with you? you would rather go n/a than turbo? yeah, it's easier, but, uh, you don't get jack s**t out of it. well, you don't get s**t out of it on 4-bangers. we're not dealing with gawd-awful big displacement american v8's here, we're talking about fuel-efficient 4-bangers.

Nah, You can do a LOW boost turbo kit for under $2000, just to get then thing force fed. And then if you wanan go higher boost later you can start slapping on other things.

Turbulence, Boom just does not want any turbo tiburon, hes afraid one might pass him in his automatic awd wrx smile.gif

Greddy e-manage $300-$400

Turbo (hell lobert got a t3/t4 for $50! to big, but damn $50!) $150 for a t3

Intercooler (a must with 10:1 compression) depends on size $20-$2000

Manifold $150-$400 depending on what you want

radiator hoses or OEM hoses $50-100

bigger fuel pump. Grab a used mitsu GSX or GST one, plugs right in. Will be able to hand max fuel you can put through your stock internals.
$30-$80

Clutch and bov is not needed if you stay under 7psi.

but recirulating BOV are easy had for aslow as $10

Clutchs, $200+

Now , you wont be able to do a turbo kit for under $2000 if you WONT tune it youself and if you wont do the installing yourself.

Besides....if you dont do that? Whats the point in tuning. That all the fun, taking the car apart and putting the stuff on.

Now before ppl start bitching, I could see you having your friend put the clutch in while hes at his work at the garage or something. But go for it, unbolt those nut and put the manifold on.

IN my exp, I do a better job with the car then shops. People dont like working hyundai cause they think they suck, Special garage cars cause they are interested in cars. They wont show your car the same respect as say a ford mustang or a more prefered car.

Just remember, If that slack jaw mechanic they hired at the dealer can do it. So can you!
