Custom Turbo..Good Idea??
good point shaddoh, but i'm having mine installed rather for a lack of resources. i have no doubt that i could install my own setup if i had the shop tools to press fit the pistons, bend the piping, support the tranny, etc. but i'm not one of those people who has a cousin that owns a garage, so i have to just deal with it. i'm confident tho in my guy, he knows his stuff. and he's just as excited about working on my hyundai as i am, just cause no one's ever brought him one.
same here, we all understand and know how great it is to work on your own car, damn Edwin and I do as much as we can on Saturdays and sometimes during the week... BUT like you said sometimes we don't have all the tools to do what we can... Also many of us have 9-5 jobs during the week and only have the weekend to catch up on stuff that needs to be done on saturday... I for example don't get home everynight till about 6:30pm, and I do work on my car many weekdays but only have until about 10pm before our neighbors bitch with all the noise we're making, and I have witnesses to prove that... then saturdays, yes we work on the car but we may not have this tool or that tool, and we also will not waste money on a tool we will need for 1 day only... and also most of us still use our own cars as daily drivers, I wish I could afford to drop the car for a month and just work on it during the weekend non-stop till it gets done, but I can't... thus why the shop does most of the work now...
In my example though, most of the shops now are my main sponsors, and most of the work they rather do themselves, remember my car, is almost basically their car now, if I were to **** it up and not go to a show for something I did, then they would drop me... that is not good for any of us...
So I again say, unless you can be w/o your car for a good amount of time, or you can work on it for 1 week straight and no work, and you have all the tools needed, and you have the know how on everything or most of it, then you better have more than $2,000.00 to make it happen... And maintenance on a turbo engine takes away the cheapness already, cause you will need stuff almost constantly...
have fun and just becareful, but we're all here to help

Well, I found instead of paying $40 bucks an to have some guy work on a car he does not like nor wants to work on simply for the fact you paid him, he also going to hury that work, cause the sooner he gets it done, the sooner he can get in the next kids car and screw with that one.
Instead of paying that mechanic the cash, I found it is always cheaper to BUY that specialized tool you need. I pick up a tranny jack for $50.
wow, $50 I can now change my clutch and not have to pay the $300 the shop charges.
It should not ever take a week to do anything to the car. You just need to learn to plan. You do so much, so you are not stuck with a car. Take a few more days planning and you can really stretch your budget and have more fun doing it yourself.
Working a saturday through till sunday, should be enough time to complete almost any modification.
And if you plan on doing something big like a turbo, you need to think ahead and take a day or two off. so you have that extra time.
Also, once you get into your car and start taking stuff apart, you dont panic as much when you have a problem. Or when you ehar a noise coming from a certain area, mayb eyou have worked on that area or seen it from the other side, you know whats there and what could be making a sound like that.
I think shop school should be mandatory now for schools. also the more you know about your car. the cleaner it will run. Cause you can change your plugs for $6 instead of waiting once a year and pay $40 for a shop to do it like some people do.
dont be afraid of your car! Get into it. Special with engines costing $300. Say ya **** up, big deal! All the cash you spent on trying it youself you be able to easily grab the a new engine, if something so bad goes wrong..
Anyway that my opinion.
But thats not what this topic is about.
Yes Custom turbo are the BEST. You just need to have the TIME and MONEY to put into it.

Maintaining a turbocharged car can be quite expensive. Especially in the tuning that it takes. I would rather spend 2k on N/A parts than taking the chance on the turbo.
Curiously asking, how much tuning do you have to do to your car after the turbo is installed and you get it tuned the first time. Do you have to constantly keep getting it tuned? People who have turbos in their car from the dealership don't have to do that, do they?Maintaining a turbocharged car can be quite expensive. Especially in the tuning that it takes. Once you have it tuned. and assuming you leave it alone IE (not turning up boost or changing to a bigger intercooler) You wont have to retune it ever.
What he is talking about is you need to be religious and change your SYNTHETIC oil every $3k miles. cause a turbo cooks oil very easily.
And of course a filter change everytime.
turbos usually need to be rebuilt every 50k miles.
Turbo engines are very picky, and in any type of driving a turboed engine that was n/a is considered hard use.
