I've read Maximum Boost and the method they used to choose a turbo size was by looking at the flow map. Well what if a flow map isn't available. What other methods can be used when choosing a turbo?

On ebay many sellers show the a/r of a turbo, how do you read the a/r?

for a turbo on e-bay, i would find out what turbo it is and what size it is then get info from the manufacturer. is it a turbonetics, greddy or a stock turbo from a car? if it is any of those you can easily get a flow chart from the maker of the turbo or car manufacturer.

also in dealing with a used turbo on e-bay, find out how many miles it has on it, if there was any rebuilds on it, any shaft play, how old it is, what car it came off of if it is a stock turbo from a car. i think everyone says they have no shaft play in the turbo but i dont trust e-bay that much.

is there good pics of the turbo you are looking at on e-bay? how does the compressor wheel look? any signs of burnt oil on either side of the wheels?

any sign of damage to any of the fins on the wheels?

i had a brand new turbo from turbonetics and the compressor seal blew out and i burnt oils real bad and it made both sides of the turbo carbon black.

what are your plans for power with the car? are you looking for a smaller turbo for a little more umph or all out gross power?

the maximum boost book is a good starting point but there are a few more things to deal with in turboing a tib. if you have any questions at all there are a few of us here that have been putting out great numbers on a few different types of turbos.

I'm hoping to get within the area of 250whp. I'd like a turbo with quick spool up and good efficiency as the area for ambient air to get to the intercooler is reduced due to the fact that I have the Cuda kit.
Any help or suggestion is greatly appreciated.

with that in mind, the easiest way would be with what i have, the standard T3/T4 with a 50 trim compressor. it spools up starting at 2500rpm and is at full boost at 4000rpm.

it may sound like a slow spool up and full boost but it is'nt in person.

there is a definate feel of turbo lag but the power this turbo puts out definately makes up for it.

i am only at 10psi but i am putting out 233whp. max boost on this turbo is 27psi so knowing that i am not even using half of the turbo and i am making this much power, i can only imagine what my gains will be when i am able to max it out.

i am taking a guess when i say i should be able to see 350whp at max boost.

now that you say you only want 250whp, have you done research on other things to reach that goal?

do a search here and in other forums to see what people have done to reach these goals.

for a helpful tip: you wont be able to use stock pistons and rings for this goal.

being at 233whp, my rings did not hold. i am rebuilding the engine right now with forged pistons and rods.

drop me a line djalkyd@yahoo.com with any questions you may have. i will try to help you out as much as possible, if i cant then there are many people here and in other forums like hyundaiaftermarket.com, that can help out.

the biggest advice i can lend right now is do a real good search here and in HA.com for answers to any question you may have.

i think every question has been asked between here and there so you should find a lot of info between the two.

good luck with everything and happy tuning
