Default Blow off valve...when do you need it?

When is a BOV necessary and what dictates the need of a unit? Is it relative running under 8 PSI?

Never imo 80's f1 cars running 60psi never used them, rally cars never used them, save your money.

yes

cars with million dollar budgets never used em, groups with vehicles that get rebuilt after every race never used em....im sure the OP has a million dollar budget to put into his car

get a BOV, reduce compressor surge, make your motor last longer than 1 race

Even endurance race cars didn't use them, show me a turbo that was destroyed from not running one.

from forced peformance's web site

compressor surge

BROKEN FINS

now imagine where the broken fins went....hmmm

and yes, cars with million dollar budgets that can have turbos replaced every race didnt run them

a DSM bov can be had for 25 bux

why risk it, hell at the very least compressor surge has been linked to the bearings wearing prematurely so even if it doesnt cause IMMEDIATE damage, it can put unneeded wear on your turbo

steel? are you boosted? do you have ANY real world experience?

f1 cars run fuel im sure is available at every gas station and being that they rev to something like 18000 rpms, im sure thats also safe to do in a hyundai

comparing someones daily driver to a f1, rally, and enduro car is like comparing a foam glider to a F-18

That looks like foreign object damage from not using a filter http://www.autospeed.com.au/cms/A_1259/article.html, don't trust anyone selling bovs for information. And yeah I'm boosted

I've been running no bov and low boost for over a year. If you feel like reading it rice racing gives a lot good reasons why don't need a bov.

^^^And THEN comes the issue of rev stability control when a recirculating BOV is used standard, and how much easier a car is to tune when a recirculating valve is present.

In my experience a BOV is pretty much a cosmetic add in if your running low boost (<10psi). On a typical well matched, well built turbocharger the shaft speeds will not be to the point where the surge can hurt anything. Its when you start getting into the really high shaft speeds with a good amount of air pressure in the pipes that things can break. Also if your using some chinese knock off turbocharger things can break.

Is it a good investment? Yes. Is a good quality BOV cheap? Not really unless you buy a used one. STAY AWAY FROM EBAY KNOCK OFFS!!

Oh and one last thing, that damaged compressor wheel could ONLY be from foreign object contamination. I have seen a wheel break from too much surge and high shaft speeds. Most wheels are cast and a break is just that a break of a fin. That wheel in the pic looks like something got lodged in the housing and the wheel continually smashed into it.
