Hi all, well my '97 Beta 1, 1.8L engine ( 4 cyl, base, VIN "M", 8th digit), is at 128k miles and I found a local '99 2.0L Elantra engine (4 cyl, VIN "F", 8th digit) with 33k miles at a j/y for $450. I know it will fit and all but I'm trying to build up my low end and torque for a "quick" daily driver. Would doing this for 10hp and 4lbs with my 1.8 cams be better than just getting another 1.8L? I'm 99% sure I will stay N/A but there's a change it will be s/c some day fing02.gif . As for keeping it N/A is this the better move, confused when I read about 1.8 crank in the 2.0 block, is the 2.0 block better for low end? Also I know I read it here before but could not find it searching would my 1.8L Tib ECU work with this engine? This is my first swap (with help of course) and any help, particulary Jaws' would be appreciated, thanks.

The engine will fit no problem, it's better with the 2.0l than another 1.8l ... The 1.8l intake CAM fit in the 2.0l (the exhaust one are the same) and the 1.8l ECU is recommended when swaping the CAM.

I don't know about the 1.8l crackshaft but I would keep the 2.0l as it is except for the intake CAM!

Good luck with that! fing02.gif

I would go ahead with the swap. You'll have a lot younger motor to rely on, and you'll be gaining more than just the factory # differences when you add the 1.8 cam in the new motor.
For $450, it's worth the peace of mind.

Ok thanks for the replies guys appreciate it. I found the article and I will need a different ECU for that ECU gain does it really lower our mpg, has this actually been tested out? There was nothing in that post. (Sorry if that's off-topic) Is the 2.0l engine have more power in the low-end 1-4k, I looked at both dyno charts and they look preaty similar from 1-4k rpms, but obviously there isn't one with a swapped intake cam. Any experiences would help, Thank you.

Don't compare dyno charts. They are a "general" calculation of HP.

The 2.0L will have a little more HP and TQ.

You don't NEED the ECU right now. Just get the more reliable motor.

Alright guys thank you I'm picking up the engine today and over the winter I'm having the heads P&P, borring the IM/TB and changing the pullys. I'll keep you all posted on how it goes.

i agree with Jon,... just get the engine.

Since your doing a lot of NA mods, you might wanna lighten the stock flywheel or buy a fidanza while its out. Do your clutch as well.

If you havent done the port and polish on the head yet, you might wanna save your money and do the flywheel instead. Read up on P&P on the beta... not that many people have been THAT successful.
