yeah I remember seeing a chart with the elantra gearing ratio being a bit higher, Only problem now is finding a good transmission and the ones at the junkyard have about 150,000+ miles on them, Idk how long the manuals last surely no where near the automatics though.

I can confirm that. I have a 99 elantra tranny in my 97 FX. Its not just 5th gear its the final that's up a notch. You lose just a hair of pull from low rpms but you wouldn't notice the difference if you didn't beat the hell out of your car.



Oh also.. There was only different between my 97 tib trans and the 99 elantra trans. The casting for the front cover/bell housing was exactly the same except the bottom starter bolt hole was 1 inch thinner. I had to put spacers on the original bolt when I first put it in...

In general manual trannnys will outlast an auto trans. You just worry about the synchros when buying a j/y trans. If I was really worried then I would pour some gear oil in the speed sensor hole and see what comes out the drain, if clean then it's good, if metal shavings then it was some how destroyed.
