Default short shifter

after installing and using my short shifter
(from shark racing santa was good to me this year) it always felt very stiff almost like shifting thru sand. so i reinstalled a stock shifter-got that for free from the same auto recycler that i got my leather seats from.
i went to work on the short shifter
first the two short tubes of the lower arm were not straight or parallel straightened them.
second-removing all the metal burrs from all the punched holes.
third- the nut that is molded into the plastic shifter base wasnt flush with the
surrounding plastic-5 minutes with a wood
chisel paring away the plastic flush with
the steel nut
fourth- got rid of all the plastic bushings and replaced them with oillite bushings
even made a new round brass bushing that fits into the lower arm- use lapping compound so that there is no play there.
fifth- made a bracket that fit under and around the plastic shifter housing
to support the assembly (with cutting a hole in the housing to make room for the longer arm of the short shifter there was some
"flexing of the housing)
i guess what i did was to "blueprint" the whole assembly. use plenty of grease
i reinstalled the whole assembly yesterday
and lo and behold it now shifts like a dream . all traces of "stiffness and
gritty shifting" are a thing of the past

the only thing it cost me was buying
a 25/64 dia reamer (.390) ($15.00)
but now i have the tool!!
the rest of the stuff came from where i work.
i work for a machinery manufacturing co.
couple of hours in the shop-lunch time and stay late after work was all it took.
as far as doing it for anyone else-
i would need to have your shifter assembly for a couple of days-the complete assembly-
plastic base and all other parts-dont need the shift knob.
also if you wanted a brass bushing for the lower lever and if you wanted postiive stops
instead of the silly rubber ones.
i already have a stock shifter assembly
completed with the brass bushings(i need something while i was modifing the
short shifter assembly). this moves so sweet
finger tips it all it takes. but the throw is as a stock unit.

If I'm understanding this correctly, then the throw is not reduced with the short shifter. And if the throw is not reduced, then what is the point of having a short shifter? I'm confused wink.gif

i have two shifter assemblies!
the one in my car now has the short shifter
it reduces the throw as it was designed for.
i replaced all the white plastic bushings
with oillite or brass bushings.
the second shifter assembly has a stock shifter assembly on it. the throw is the same as stock but i did replace all the white plastic bushings with the same
oillite and brass bushings.
both assemblies have the adjustable postiive
stops on them.
hope this clears things up
