AC Belt Question

What is all this talk about taking the AC belt off before a 1/4 mile race. What are the gains of this? Also, has anybody tested it yet?

I don't see it doing anything. As long as the AC is off, the clutch on the pulley is free... If I'm not mistaken, the AC belt also drives the alternator?
