I just got an older xbox, and its having some problems with the disc drive I believe. I bought a brand new game tonight, and like all the other games I play on it, it'll make weird noises and have errors saying the disc is bad after a while of playing or something.
How do you check to see if its that bad drive? What all should I do? sad.gif

um... i don't have pictures but i'll do a DIY from memory...
you'll need torx type 10 and torx type 12 drivers or equivalant hex keys(not recommended) and a electronics/jewlers screw driver set
grease of some kind, lithium or WD-40 or something
isopropyl alcohol
q-tips
pull off the feet of the xbox
find the screws under the labels
stick the torx through the labels and pull all the torx screws out of the xbox (6 all together)
pull the top cover off
remove 3 torx screws.
remove cable connections from hard drive(just pull, you're not going to break them)
remove hard drive
remove cable connections from disk drive(yank em out)
remove disk drive
Open disk drive case with screw driver
push on emergency release (white tab visible from front of drive)
pull out drive tray
push on drive tray catches
remove drive tray
remove belts one by one and
apply alcohol with qtips to all moving surfaces and belts
greese all moving surfaces except belts
put the thing back together.
installation is the same as removal except you do everything backwards and you don't have to push on the drive tray catches to get it back in.
edit: hehe, may as well clean the laser with a qtip when you have it opened... nothing like a clean laser.
Edit EDIT: if you have a couple of days to let it dry before using it, spray it down inside with water, if not use air. seriously. i'm an electronics tech.
Edit Edit edit: hahha but remove the batteries first and ensure it's completly dry before plugging it in.
or use isopropyl alcohol instead and compressed air to dry it.

Go look around there. You probably have one of the older Thompson or Phillips DVD drives, they are crap and go out quickly. Get a new Samsung drive off of ebay.

Yeah, redz is right. If you plan on using +-R RW disks you'll need to play with the media on each drive though. people argue back and forth on samsung and philips.
this is what one guy posted on xbox-scene but it really depends on the type and quality of disc you use.
Thomson TGM600: DVD+R, DVD-R, CD-RW (NO CD-R)
Samsung SDG-605: DVD-R, CD-RW, CD-R (NO DVD+r)
Not any DVD drive will work either. it has to have the xbox firmware on it to read the media.
i hope this helps.

Alright, how do I check and see if it is indeed one of those older Thompson or Phillips DVD drives?
And I'm guessing that Samsung SDG-605 would be the best to get?

samsung 616 flashed will work too. But really any drive will work unless you have a mod chip installed. they will all read the stock xbox disks. The only real reason to upgrade is after you have a mod chip installed so you can play burned video games and load up software on the HD. Personally i'd try to fix the one you have. all the tools and supplies come up to $20 at wallmart and it's going to take you 3 hours total if you work slow and careful. there's no warranty to start with so you may as well try it and then if you can't get it to work, buy one.
