I know subarus have all been boxer engines ever since they got away from two stroke engined cars. So about from 74 on

 

I have heard alot of cars sound like this and it's not just because of the engine..

A friend of mine back in the U.K used to have a ford escort RS turbo and he had done some sick mods to it.

Namely hybrid turbo (from a renault) fiesta short throw gearbox, massive intercooler, bore job to blueprint, dump valve, intakes, full scorpion exhaust using 3" pipe all the way through and god knows what else.

Cost him an absolute fortune but kicked out 260hp and made an awesome growl.
