Default why are radar detectors illegal in Virginia?

can anyone tell me why radar detectors are illegal in virginia ?? got pulled today and ticketed, cuz he detected my detector. when he asked me to give him the radar detector, i said no. he went on to say that he detected it and i could either give it to him, or he could search my car for it. i wasnt having this guy search my sh*t, so i gave it to him, he returned with a ticket. FML. cant wait to see this guy in court go ahead and click me i cant find the answer to this question...

because tickets = income. Why do detectors emit anything that can be detected?

yea detectors can be detected, older ones and cheap ones at least. nope no VG2, it was like a 10 year old Cobra that worked pretty good, saved me thousands of dollars in speeding tickets over the years. guess im gonna have to upgrade.

i wonder if the judge will answer when i ask him why they are illegal ?

I always thought they were a passive sort of antenna thing.

Derp, because the only reason to have one is so you can break the law and get away with it?

yea me too until today, i did me some research. it has to do with the LOCAL OSCILLATOR
The superheterodyne receiver in radar detectors has a local oscillator that radiates slightly
from the wiki

stocker, that cant be proven, in most cases people slow down when they know the cops are around. there is no data that substantiates the claim that people use detectors to break speeding laws. when you boil it down, people use radar detectors to save money from unjust speeding tickets.

Hmmmmmmmm. I'm not sure if he legally can search your car for a detector if he didn't see it, or if you even were obligated to hand him the detector. You have every right to keep a detector in your car, that doesn't imply that you were in fact using it.

You would have to check the laws. All I know is that every time I'm in VA, I always turn it off and hide it.

I didn't know you were close by!

If a cop see's you slow down right before you get to hit, he has probable cause to search your car for a detector since they are illegal. So whether you want to hand it over or let him search you, doesnt matter. He will be allowed to no matter what because you slowed down, making them believe you have it.

Its like if you get pulled over and a cop smells drugs in the car. Just because they cant see it, doesnt mean they dont have probable cause to search the car.

yea HKC, im right around the corner man. he has probable cause to search because his equipment detected my detector. but i should have locked it in the glove box, then i would have let him search...
