go to sony's website, then support, then your model and search for vid drivers. or bypass all that and find specifically what driver your motherboard(unless you have dedicated video) needs.

just download the network and display driver from sony. do a complete flush and reinstall then use window's update to pull the latest drivers for your machine. That way you have a fresh XP machine and up to date with no sony bloat software.

Just make sure that your machine is only connected long enough to download the drivers. It only take a matter of minutes for a machine to be infected without a firewall or anti virus if its naked on the web..Be cool, wrap your tool.

i'd install a flavor of Linux on it. most likely kubuntu because it supports most all hardware. would run faster and be more stable. i have an old Compaq about the same specs. i'd say linux ftw!

I ran XP pro for a long time. Then I decided to make the move to get the SP2 and update everything. Computer ran like trash! After many frustrating nights, I simply went back to just XP Pro with no updates. Computer ran flawless. SP2 is known to have major issues. If I where you and still want to run XP, JUST install XP, do not install the Service Packs. Give that a shot. Betcha thats half the problem.

A LOT of programs out there now require SP2.

I know, and thats honestly the reason I went ahead and bought a new computer and made the jump to Vista. Not that I realy like it better, but it does run WAY better then XP with SP2 ever did on my old computer. If I could have continued to use XP Pro original, then I would have never upgraded. But they make it so you have to upgrade. Even though many programs require SP2, doesnt mean that it runs better. Just sucks if you want to run XP, they force you into loading SP2, even if it causes your system to crash and be unstable.

My opinion, throw in some extra memory, like double what you have now (or at least make sure it has 1 gb of memory). Then wipe it, put on XP like so many already said, but make it a Mediacenter edition. This way you could put it in the car, use it for tuning or whatever, but also you could attach a screen to it (touchscreen maybe) and have a MC in your car, put your MP3 collection, Divx collection...heck, if you have one you can put your pron collection on it as well, maybe with an external Harddisk.
But that's what I would do smile.gif

I'd say put ubuntu on it and it will run 10x better than xp, plus you can still do anything you want to with it.

If you do choose to do a windows os, go with server 2000 or 2003 so you can manage those printers and make it a fileserver
