Don't join the guard... Those guys sit around and drink on the drill weekends (in my experience). If you want to do some real army stuff, you have to join the real army.
maybe back in the 80s, thanks for the stereotype. Ive done active (3years) and the guard (3.5 years and going). As far as the weekends they might not be the most high speed group Ive seen but during the deployment I would have rather been with my TX national gaurd unit than 90% of the active component I saw over there. wink1.gif

2 years ago, the Kansas national guard, at the armory near Fort Riley, was doing a "recruitment drive" at a fair. They had to call me in to work on their stuff because they couldn't do it. When I got there I found out why. beerchug.gif
I thought it was a pretty messed up deal. 1sgt was driving people back and forth in the back of a 6 wheel with a automatic lift bed. He'd just bring them back, and lift the bed then go fine more.
It's not ALL of the national guards. But that's my experience. I know most of them go for a weekend they take care of equipment and make sure they are still ready. Most of them don't really care because they are leaving at the end of the weekend. On the 2 weeks a year they'll usually do some houah stuff then go home. But they really don't care. They usually do their 2 weeks a year on a active army base.
