Read, read and them some more reading. Listen to the advice of the other more knowledgable people, scan/suf the internet for information you are interested in/things you want to know. I have the full set of Factory Service Manuals and about 10-15 other books on engines, suspensions, turbo's etc...

To tell you the truth, the best training was probably my motorcycle. It has a lot of automotive concepts, just smaller. Forks, shox, cams, valves..etc..etc...
I always knew if I totally HORKED my Motorcycle, it would only be MAX $1000 to fix whatever I screwed up. So I had the freedom to try things I never would have on a car. I did my first valve adjustment and cam swap on my motorcycle. I would never have done a first cam swap on a $10,000+ car, but on a $2000 beater motorcycle...it was a lot less scary. My older motorcycle is also a lot simpler than our engines, so it was easy to learn the "concepts" of how an engine works...then apply the concept to the Hyundai motor.
