Tib owners with jackasses. Lol. That seems weird.
Cyber, thanks for the info! I knew about the dust baths, which is why I'm a bit hesitant. I know the work that goes into taking of a chin because one of my friends has one. Thing is, he wishes it would be sociable. He puts so much time and money into the little guy and he just doesn't want to be dealt with.
I might go with sugar gliders. It all depends. I'd get chins or sugar gliders now, but I'd have to move stuff from one part of my room to another. Pretty much, switch stuff for a bigger cage. To do that, the hamsters have to go. Eh, I dunno, lol. I think I'm going to wait until January when I move.

I have a sable Burmese cat. He's two+ years and is the most insane cat that I've ever owned. If he hears anyone outside our front door, he growls loudly and continues to growl until we let them in. The minute they step over the doorjamb, he becomes their best friend. Go figure, lol.

www.chinbin.com has a lot of great info and advice about chins. I got my oldest male from her when he was barely weaned.
Like Cyber said, you absolutely must get the chins from a respected breeder. You should also get them as young as possible and then keep raisins on hand. Pay a huge amount of attention to them when they're little. They'll let you know with a slight pinch when they want to be let down. They are social and prefer to be with other familiar chinchillas.
We currently have 6 of them, 3 femmes and 3 males. My males for some reason have ALWAYS been more socialable. They come to the side of the cage and poke their noses into the cage mesh, laying their ears down when I come in the room. It's their attempt at a pathetic prisoner look so I'll open the cage up and take them out. The oldest female was a resue from a pet store and she tolerates being stroked or pet but does not like being picked up at all. I think the other femmes have picked up on her untrusting sentiment towards humans and that's why they are less socialable.
Also, a huge cage is a must unless you want them running around outside the cage dropping pellets and chewing things a lot. Our cages are 4'x3'x2' from www.qualitycage.com. They make some of the absolute best cages ever. They have specifically contacted pet breeders for input on all their cage construction and they will make custom cages. We had them custom make ours with 1"x1/2" mesh so they would be safe for babies and they couldn't escape. We also have www.qualitycage.com/exwheels.html flying saucer exercise wheels that the chins absolutely love, even though it took them almost a week to figure out how to use them.
As for smell, chinchillas are the least odiferous of all the rodents. As natural high desert/mountain dwellers they don't consume a lot of water and don't urine as much as their cousins. Also, fresh fruits have too much sugar for them and they are almost diabetic by nature so their food really has no scent other than the hay.
The best thing about chins is that due to their thick coats they can't get fleas and they can't carry pet dander. Every other mammal (us included) has about 1-2 hairs per hair follicle. They have 80-100! They're naturally hypoallergenic (assuming you're not allergic to the timothy hay).
I have a dog named Nella..she's a miniature pinscher, and about five years old. There's some koi in my backyard pond and some fish in the aquarium but their my dad's heh. laugh.gif
