For those of you that have chinchillas, are they sociable? Everyone I have talked to that knows about them, has had them, or currently has them has said they don't like to be touched really. They also told me they are VERY messy and smelly.

I only ask because I don't know if I want a chinchilla or a pair of sugar gliders when my hamsters pass away, which shouldn't be too long. They are already 2 years old and showing signs of ageing.

Chinchillas are very cute animals and are much larger then hamsters. You can let them run around your house but you have to keep an eye on them..good luck on catching them. They can be pretty fearless at times, I have a large 16lb cat and he's scared of the chins and the chins are unafraid of him!! Most chins do not like to be touched but they will huddle amongest themselves (it's good to have a pair) and it's not good to buy a chin if you have young children. I do have a chin that likes to be handled which is rare..I lucked out with purchasing him!!
Make sure you buy from a respected breeder and not from a pet store (like Pet's Mart) You don't know what the animal's linage is if you buy one from a pet store plus pet stores tend to sell cheap food for the animals and, in some cases, the chin could be sick when purchased. A breeder will keep records of the chin which comes in handy and will provide the adequate diet for the animals. The lady who sold me mine is one of the most respected chin breeders/owners there is and she has provided me with papers and all necessary information that was needed for them. I think I have some pics in my computer, if you want to look PM me.
One other thing, they don't take water baths, they require dust baths at least 3 times a week. Hope this helps, there's so much but don't want to take up too much space with this smile.gif
