2006. Afghanistan. Operation Medusa.
Crawled across the Argandab river on a quiet morning after 72hrs of 155mm fire preparing the position, everyone's world erupted when the first IED struck my vehicle. Taliban were hitting us from the hills and huts on 3 sides, small arms fire supported by RPG and PKM, it was coordinated and effective. The crew in my LAV was shaken up and our vehicle a mobility kill which was blocking forward travel, we were being hit from the sides and rear...rear being the most vulnerable with the least amount of armor. The other vehicles layed down mind blowing amounts of 25mm fire, our GPMGs chewed through 220rd belts of 7.62 ammo, sections dismounted and we're maneuvering to fix and destroy a very skilled enemy. When the evac from my vehicle was complete I hopped on my radio and called in a 1000lb JDAM to destroy our unrecoverable hull, we confirmed all dismounted soldier were back in their vehicles and under cover and began to leave the kill zone. I relayed final target information and the US air support on station began its approach, 3min later we received notice that the ordinance was off the rail. Less than a minute later the most internal shaking concussion rushed through my body as the 1000lb bomb took my 3.5 million dollar pain bringer into nothing more than a pile of twisted metal and blast insulation.
